MYRBERG / BENNY CD FOR JUNE 10 RELEASE / CHESS FOLIO

Mono Music has now officially confirmed that the new CD will be released the 10th of June.

The CD will contain 14 songs, among them the well-known "Calle Schwens vals" and "Så länge skutan kan gå", and also lesser known songs as "Ronsard" and "Herdinnan", all in new and exciting arrangements by Martin Östergren.

Martin Östergren's Orchestra and Benny Andersson's orchestra are participating on the CD.

Per Myrberg is to accompany Helen Sjöholm on her summer tour with start in the beginning of July - "Under bar himmel".

A scan of the front cover can be seen by clicking the web site link above.
______

Mono Music has now also released a folio for the "Chess på svenska" album. It's simply called "Chess På Svenska - Notalbumet", and contains many of the earlier released songs for the original CD.

However it also contains gems as "Glöm mig om du kan" - the first time for ABBA-fans to see the sheet-music to "Just Like That".

The folio is available at Cirkus and has also been distributed to the book shops, but I have only found it in one shop. It has a similar classy blue cover to the CD release with the text "Notalbumet" added.

BJÖRN ON DUTCH NEWS PROGRAM

The Dutch news program "Netwerk" broadcast an interview with Björn about the success of the Mamma Mia! musical.

Besides the things he usually says about the Mamma Mia! (question to Björn: Chess or Mamma Mia?, Björn answers Mamma Mia!) he also talks about the ABBA reunion at Görel Hanser`s 50th birthday party in the summer of 1999 where the four sang a traditional Swedish song together.

He remembers that it was quite strange. He was standing left, Benny right and the girls in between them. When he looked aside at Agnetha while singing the song, he says about that, "it was the weirdest feeling", "What is this", "I recognize this".

It was the feeling he knew so well from the ABBA years. This means that there was chemistry between the four former ABBA members in 1999.

Other remarkable question to Björn: Frida or Angetha? Björn (laughing out loud). He says, "Jesus, I`m glad that I`m not married to eighter of them anymore", "That is one impossible question", "I`ll be dead if I answer that".

FRIDA'S NOT MOVING BACK TO SWEDEN / SE & HÖR

There is an article on Frida in 'Se och hör' (27 May 2003 issue). This translation is to be found at www.raffem.com where you can see a scan of the article:

ABBA-Frida is enjoying her life with her new friend Heinz:

"I am not going to move back"

Three years ago Frida lost her husband, Prince Ruzzo. Now she has a new friend by her side and a wonderful summer to look forward to.

It has been three difficult years for Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 58. On October 29, 1999 her beloved husband Prince Ruzzo, 49, died in her arms after a long battle with cancer.

Frida disappeared and many of her friends were concerned about her. But she is back now. More blonde, happier and more beautiful than ever.

The reason for this change is Heinz Julen, 39, a Swiss painter and artist. A tall, handsome and interesting man who reminds you of a young Prince Ruzzo.

Frida returns to Stockholm every year for the Polar Music Prize at Berwaldhallen. This year she arrived together with Heinz. Frida wore a modern rose silk dress and an exotic scarf. Heinz wore a folk outfit from Switzerland. Both were sun tanned and were clearly enjoying each other's company.

ESTABLISHED ARTIST

Heinz is Frida's neighbour in Zermatt in Switzerland, one of the most exclusive tourist locations in Switzerland. He is in charge of a culture centre in the little village as well as a painter and sculptor. He is an established artist and has held exhibitions in, amongst other places, in Malmö (Sweden). Frida and Heinz stayed in Stockholm a couple of days before returning to Switzerland. Frida grows vegetables there in her big garden outside her huge house.

NEVER MOVE BACK TO SWEDEN

- I've lived abroad for 20 years and I'm not going to move back to Sweden, says Frida to Se & Hör.

- The most wonderful about Switzerland is that you're never recognised. You feel free - even if it is enjoyable when people come and thank you for the music and give compliments.

A NEW MAN FOR FRIDA

Svensk Damtidning Issue 22:

The time as a widow is over: A new man at ABBA-Frida's side

It was with a new guy at her side ABBA-Frida attended the prestigious "Polar Music Prize" gala last week.

Ever since his husband Ruzzo Reuss passed away three years ago she has been living alone.

- But, says one of her friends, in the middle of all the grief, she has suceeded in finding the happiness in life. She has a outstanding power.

Partly Frida now lives in Skåne (together with Ruzzo's daughters Pauline and Henriette). But most of the time she spends in her "chalet" in Zermatt in Switzerland and this is where the man at her side, the 39 year old artist Heinz Julen, lives and works.

He has grown up in the mountains in Zermatt. Just aged 16 years he built his first art studio. Without having attended an art school he started creating things of wood and designing furniture. Gradually he started making sculptures and later on he took up painting.

Today he owns a culture-centre with cinema, concert hall, art gallery and a bar. The whole complex is built in the place where his parental home was before it burnt down. He has also had exhibtion at Malmö, Sweden.

- He is an unbelievable interesting man, says a person who has contact with him.

Frida herself is a very creative person and this very evening both had very much fun before they went back to Zermatt. For Frida it's mostly the walking tours of the mountains that draw her to live in Zermatt. To have a very good friend is of course something that enriches life.

We tried to reach Frida for a comment about her new partner, but did not succeed before this issue's deadline.

NOW BENNY'S SON HAS A RECORDING CAREER

From today's Expressen:

Now Benny's son has a career in music

ABBA-Benny Andersson's son walks in the footsteps of his father. Ludvig Andersson, 21, has now committed himself to his own music career. In July his first single will be released.

The ABBA-star hasn't discouraged his youngest son from committing himself to a music career of his own. This summer Ludvig Andersson's first single is to be released. And the music is far from the well-known ABBA-sound.

- I have been playing in some groups and have done a couple of performances. Mostly a little Oasis-inspired music, and nothing that reminds you of what my father did and does, Ludvig Andersson said to Expressen a year ago.

But despite that, Ludvig has worked together with his father. The last time as a singing extra in the musical "Chess" the last year at Cirkus in Stockholm. He was only four years old when Chess premiered internationally.

- We don't have a clear idea how to present him. We cannot say anything at the moment, Sanji Tandan says, Managing Director for S56 Recordings.

Ludvig Andersson will keep a low profile, but the record company S56 promises that he is going to be seen in TV-performances this summer. Like many other celebrity-children that are asked if it's an advantage to have a famous parent, it is both a good and difficult thing for Ludvig Andersson:

- Up to now, in life, it has only been an advantage in all ways. But I would never have been able to participate in "Chess" if not the people there wouldn't believe in that I would manage to do the job, Ludvig said earlier in an interview with Expressen.

It remains to see how the own recording career is received by the audience. His album will be released during the Swedish autumn.

==============

And s56.se says:
A first kiss from Ludvig Andersson
Singer / songwriter Ludvig Andersson is about to release his first single, One Touch, to radio. The song, which is a Phil Spector-esque anthem will be commercially released sometime in July.

Turkey edges out Belgium for top song

Turkey won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time when singer Sertab Erener took the top prize in a closely fought race in the Latvian capital with the tune Every Way That I Can.

The 39-year-old singer, a star in her home country, won against performers from 25 other countries.

But she came out on top only after a neck and neck race which lasted up to the end with Belgium's Urban Trad and the controversial Russian duo Tatu, which had been heavily favoured going into the contest.

As winner, Turkey gets a golden disc and the right to organise the 49th edition next May.

Votes from Slovenia, the last country to announce its votes, were decisive, with Sertab Erener getting 167 points, the Belgian group getting 165, and the Russian lesbian duo Tatu 164.

One of the Russia duo's singers Julia Volkova almost did not sing because of a problem with her vocal cords.

Erener is one of the most popular singers in her country, with her albums being widely sold both at home and abroad.

Last year in Tallinn, Latvia's Marija Naumova won the contest with her song I wanna, giving the ex-Soviet republic responsibility for organising the contest this year.

Ironically the host country came second last this time round, getting only five points.

Only Britain fared worse, receiving no points.

More than 6,000 spectators watched the contest in the hall with performers on a ultra-modern stage, with many special effects. More than 100 million people are believed to have watched it on television around the world.

BENNY TOURS WITH NEW SONGS!

From DN today:

Benny Andersson tours with newly written songs

BAO - with Helen Sjöholm - will do a little tour this year. It starts with Skansen on Friday the 8th of August and is ends in Gothenburg on the Sunday.

The orchestra leader has seven or eight new numbers for the orchestra "which they haven't seen yet", he tells. A few more songs and it can be a new CD this autumn, a follow-up to their successful and highly praised albumb with "Vår Sista Dans" two years ago.

Benny Andersson himself thinks of course all the songs are good - "otherwise one would not record them" - but he says that he will never know if the audience will think of them as good as "Vår sista dans".

Before the summer the orchestra can be heard on Per Myrberg's Evert Taube-record that Benny has produced and that will be released in two weeks. The orchestra is playing on two tracks, "Vals ombord" and "Den glade bagaren".

Benny is also working on the finishing of the musical "Chess" at Cirkus in Stockholm. Concerning the musical "Kristina" and Broadway, the situation hasn't been changed.

- We are almost ready, some dialogue is being shaped up. In some weeks we will have a "tip-top" manuscript. If it will become anything it will be in the end of 2005 or so, he says.

KOREAN MAMMA MIA! CAST ANNOUNCED

The cast for the Korean staging in Seoul of the worldwide smash hit Mamma Mia! has just been announced.

Park Hae-mi, who starred in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Guys and Dolls,' will take the title role of Donna. Bae Hae-sun, past star of 'Line One' and 'The Rehearsal,' will play Donna's daughter Sophie. Lee Gun-myung ('Chorus Line,' 'Gambler') will star as Sophie's fiancé Sky, Sung Ki-youn ('The Last 5 Years') as Sam, and Jeon Soo-kyeong ('Cats,' 'Chicago') and Lee Kyung-mi ('West Side Story') play Donna's former band mates Tanya and Rosie, respectively.

"We were looking for a specific kind of performer with the 'Mamma Mia factor,' accomplished actors who can not only sing and dance but are gifted with a tough spirit and a down to earth sense of humour," said Paul Garrington, Associate Director.

"In Korea, we had more than enough performers with the 'Mamma Mia factor.' The talent level was very impressive and we came up with an extremely exciting cast."

With the Seoul Arts Centre, A-Com International and Musical Company Seensee jointly investing 8 billion won ($6 million) in production costs, Mamma Mia! is scheduled to open at the Seoul Arts Center in southern Seoul starting Jan. 25 2004.

"For me this is a dream come true and this is certainly a chance for Korean musical fans to get a taste of the best there is," said Yoon Ho-jin, the head of A-Com.

Further details about the Korean production will be announced as they are confirmed.

AUSSIE NEUROSURGEON AN ABBA FAN!

Last Monday night ABC-TV televised an interesting documentary about an out-of-the-ordinary Vietnamese(?) -Australian Neuro-Surgeon, on their "Australian Story" program, who carries our brain tumour surgery on patients that many other doctors consider to be inoperable.

He has gained quite a reputation in the medical community here; and even performed brain tumour surgery on the young Australian concert pianist, Aaron McMillan.

You may be thinking what has this got to do with ABBA....well, what drew my attention to the program was that I was initially in another room of the house, and suddenly heard ABBA singing Knowing Me, Knowing You on the T.V.

ABBA music was used frequently as background music to the story and the Neuro-Surgeon went on to explain that he listens to ABBA GOLD all the time while he performs his very delicate neuro-surgery, because he claims it assists him keeping a very steady hand during the very delicate surgical procedures.

He was also later seen humming along to ABBA's Winner Takes It All as he performed further surgery.

MORE ON PER / BENNY COLLABORATION

There's an article in Expressen last month about Per Myrberg (from Chess på svenska) rapping Evert Taube tunes with Benny Anderssons Orkester.

Per Myrberg raps Taube

Soon the last performance of Chess is played. But the collaboration between Per Myrberg and Benny Andersson continues. They have made a record with Evert Taube tunes.

- It is partly reinterpretations. Among other things I rap on one tune, says Per Myrberg.

The idea for the Evert Taube record was born as early as a year ago.

- I and Benny sat and talked about Taube and became enthusiastic, and suddenly Benny said: You, we’ll make a record! Says Per Myrberg.

17 tunes are recorded with Per myrberg sining and Benny Anderssons Orkester accompanying. In addition, some handpicked musicians contribute, for example Jojje Wadenius.

“It was fun to rap”

- Certain tunes don’t have a completely traditional arrangement. One one tune there’s only piano, and one is only guitar and bass, says Per Myrberg.

And Per Myrberg takes as said a new grip an tries to rap.

- It was fun. In the beginning it was a little hard, though not when I got the hang of how I should do it. Several of Taube’s most popular work is on the record, including Calle Schewens vals and Så länge skutan kan gå. Certain tunes are more unknown, like for example Ronsard och herdinnan and Brittisk ballad.

- It has been really fun, says Per Myrberg. The record, which has not got a name yet, is expected to be released at the end of May.

Pop music industry takes Sweden by storm

ABC News Online

Feature: Swedish music fans love pop

Pop music industry takes Sweden by storm

Thirty years after ABBA, the Swedish pop music industry has grown into a leading global force.

Almost three decades after ABBA sparked a worldwide Swede-pop craze, the Swedish music industry has grown into a powerful global force with a finger in every pie of the business.

Ask the Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears where they come to record and the answer is Sweden.

Check with N'Sync or Celine Dion where they found their favourite songwriters and the answer would be Sweden.

Or ask professionals who is the big challenger to the pop music supremacy of the United States and Britain and again the answer is Sweden.

While Swedes did not wait for ABBA's arrival before making music, the quartet's unique success story opened the floodgates for local bands and gave them an international outlet.

Former singer of Secret Service, a Swedish band with several top hits in the 1970s, Ola Hakansson said: "After ABBA, we could see that it was possible for a Swedish band to make it abroad."

But Mr Hakansson, who today runs Stockholm Records, a Universal Music subsidiary that produces top acts The Cardigans, A-Teens and Army of Lovers, remembers that everyone at home did not applaud ABBA's famous victory in the 1974 Eurovision song contest.

"For ABBA it was a big thing to win, but there was also a corny side," he said.

"In the left-oriented Sweden of the 1970s this music was not popular with club owners and journalists."

But even as ABBA made the critics cringe on occasion, the band perfected what has remained the hallmark of Swedish pop music: good, clear melodies, often sung by strong female voices.

"We're a small country, and can't be trendsetters," Mr Hakansson said.

"But we can have success with a song, if it's good enough. We always hunt for the perfect song."

And that hunt runs deep in Sweden, where century-old folk music traditions are still very much alive.

"Sweden is in the European tradition that is based on classical music, on Mozart," he said.

And ever since Anni-Frid and Agnetha of ABBA took the music world by storm, female voices have become a hallmark of Swedish music. Roxette thrives on them, as do The Cardigans, whose lead singer Nina Persson's voice "is so typically Swedish, so melancholic", Mr Hakansson said.

Another asset of Swedish music exports is the satin angelic voice of jazz singer Lisa Ekdahl.

"Maybe it's all thanks to the girls," muses Mr Hakansson.

Change in tune

Hand-in-hand with the international success of the Swedish scene goes the urge to sing in English rather than Swedish. This may be an obvious choice in a small country where almost everyone speaks fluent English and nobody bothers to dub foreign feature films or American TV shows.

But yet the sharp edge and grittiness that features in much American and British rock music is nowhere to be found in Swedish bands' lyrics, which often leave the listener with an aftertaste of sweet banality.

"We sing in English, but English is not our mother tongue, so our lyrics are not that good," Mr Hakansson acknowledges.

"We'll never produce a Dylan or a Springsteen."

In fact, in Sweden the loudest hard rock bands still sound like the ordinary boys-next-door, and even the scruffiest grungers seem more at home with Sweden's consensus society than with revolution.

"We haven't had war, and we don't really have ghettos, so even if we want to be rebellious, we're not very good at it," Mr Hakansson said.

But what Sweden is clearly very good at is producing generation after generation of top acts with daunting efficiency.

Aspiring musicians

Take David Hellberg, an 18-year-old high school student who has played "a mix of two-step and UK garage" music with his band, The New Born Music Productions, for three years now. David knows ABBA mostly as icons from the past.

"I don't look at them as my ideal pop group, but they were good at what they did," he said.

He first thought of a career in music when an acquaintance, enrolled at the Solna Music Production School, asked him to join an impromptu group, which played so well together that it just kept on going. Since then, David, who knows that "the music business is tough", has left little to chance.

Encouraged rather than defeated by a recent record label rejection, David is working on getting more "hook" into his music and will angle for a recording contract again as soon as he is ready.

In the meantime, he plans to enrol in an afro-soul music school and has recently joined another band, DE-2, which plays more mainstream pop, just to cast the net a little more widely.

He also makes the most of the absence of barriers between music styles in Sweden, and sings and tours with a choir whose repertoire ranges from Brahms to gospel. Most importantly, David has no plan B for his future and will not even consider the possibility of failure. With quiet confidence, he states that "I have a good voice" and admits that sometimes, when watching TV, he wonders why this or that group is on MTV instead of him.

But he fully expects to be there one day, and given how efficiently Sweden churns out pop stars it cannot possibly be long now.

NICOLE MENTIONS ABBA

In Aftonbladet there's an article from the Cannes filmfestival where a journalist (Jan-Olov Andersson) spoke to Nicole Kidman. She mentions ABBA and here's my translation of that part:

Nicole Kidman, the film festival's biggest star this year, quite understands why people wait for hours to see their idols.

- As a child I did the same thing to catch a glimpse of ABBA.

Extra performance gave 385 000 kronor ($38500)

385,000 crowns was the result of the extra performance of the musical Chess. The money will go to the war victims in Iraq, through the Swedish branch of Röda Korset.

The extra performance was made on 8th of May at Cirkus in Stockholm. Composers, solists, ensamble, orchestra, all technical and administrative staff, Cirkus and distributors donated their time for free for the benefit of the war's victims, Röda Korset writes on their homepage.

"The initiative came from our ensemble and it's wonderful to see that so many took part," says Görel Hanser, MD for Briggen Teaterproduktion.
An evening in our lives can really play a part in others.

The secretary-general Christer Zettergren, thanks on beahlf of Röda Korset: " We are very grateful for the effort everyone behind Chess has shown. The Iraqi people are heading for an enormous task when it comes to getting order in their society again. In that work, we have all a responsiblity to be there and support them.

UK DAILY MAIL TALKS EUROVISION

This is an article from The Daily Mail, last Thursday, relating to the success in the UK charts of Eurovision songs.

Asked to name the most successful winning tune ever from the Eurovision Song Contest, many might pick Waterloo by ABBA.

After all, the song made the Swedish group instant stars in 1974 and they went on to have a string of hits.

But the first Top 20 of winning Eurovision entries reveals that the number one spot actually goes to Brotherhood Of Man and the cheesy Save Your Kisses For Me.

Waterloo makes only fifth place behind Puppet On A String by Sandie Shaw, Making Your Mind Up by Bucks Fizz and Dana's All Kinds Of Everything. The table compiled by the Guinness British Hit Singles, reveals Brotherhood Of Man's 1976 hit spent six weeks at number one and 16 weeks in the UK chart.

Waterloo was number one for only two weeks in the UK and spent nine weeks on the charts.

Brotherhood Of Man's success came as something of a shock to the group's Nicki Stevens, who said: 'We are thrilled and excited to have the number one spot in the Eurovision chart. Never in a million years would I have believed we could beat ABBA.'

Entries from Britain and Ireland make up nearly half of the Top 20 list, which will be published on May 23, the day before this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Latvia.

Britain has won Eurovision five times and all five winners have reached the top three in the UK singles chart. Ireland has won seven times but only four Irish entries made it into the British Hit Singles winners' list.

Israel has three entries, including 1998 winner Dana International, the transsexual whose rendition of Diva outraged orthodox Jews in Israel who called her a disgrace to the Jewish state.'

Here's the table:
1. Brotherhood Of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me (Britain, 1976): Six weeks at No1, 16 weeks in chart
2. Sandie Shaw - Puppet On A String (Britain, 1967): Three weeks at No 1, 18 weeks
3. Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up (Britain, 1981): Three weeks at No 1, 12 weeks
4. Dana - All Kinds Of Everything (Ireland, 1970): Two weeks at No 1, 16 weeks
=5. ABBA - Waterloo (Sweden, 1974): Two weeks at No 1, nine weeks
=5. Nicole - A Little Peace (Germany, 1982): Two weeks at No 1, nine weeks
7. Johnny Logan - What's Another Year (Ireland, 1980): Two weeks at No 1, eight weeks
8. Vicky Leandros - Come What May (Luxembourg, 1972): No 2, 13 weeks
9. Lulu - Boom Bang A Bang (Britain, 1969): No 2, 13 weeks
10. Johnny Logan - Hold Me Now (Ireland, 1987): No 2, 11 weeks
11. Katrina and the Waves - Love Shine A Light (Britain, 1997): No 3, 12 weeks
12. Milk and Honey (featuring Gali Atari) - Hallelujah (Israel, 1979): No 5, eight weeks
13. Severine - Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue (Monaco, 1971): No 9, 11 weeks
14. Dana International - Diva (Israel, 1998): No 11, four weeks
15: Anne Marie David - Tu Te Reconnaitras (Luxembourg, 1973): No 13, nine weeks

RED CROSS CHESS A SUCCESS

There are some pictures at www.chessthemusical.com from the recent performance on 8 May that was in aid of Red Cross, including one of Ludvig Andersson with a collecting tin.

The evening raised SEK 385,000 for the Red Cross appeal in Iraq. Görel is quoted as saying that the initiative came from the cast, while a representative from the Red Cross is also quoted expressing his thanks for their efforts.

FAN REPORT - POLAR MUSIC PRIZE 2003

I had the honour again to attend the Polar Prize in Berwaldhallen Stockholm this year.

As always it was a major event in the Swedish social calender, but this year there were very few celebrities just people from political life. The King and Queen and Crown Princess Victoria were there, Peter Jöback, with a very unflattering haircut and then most importantly our very own royal highness herself, Frida.

Frida wore a very plain pink blouse and trousers with a pink flowery patterned wrap, casual but very ellegant. She wore very little makeup but still looked beautiful with a slight tan on her face.

Frida sat next to her boyfriend and the organisers of the prize. The strange thing was that when she left the auditorium the couple left separately - maybe this was to avoid the press outside. As we were leaving Frida said hello to my friend and I walked by her side in awe, not having the nerve to speak to her - unlike last year when we chatted.

As Frida left all the media and guests focussed in on her with people chatting to her and taking pictures then she was escorted to a waiting limo, and she waved goodbye to everyone then went off for the state dinner with the King.

I regretted not talking to her when I had the chance but I swore that I would talk to her at the after-dinner party in Berns later that night.

Unfortunately Frida decided not to attend the party. When I asked the organisers where she was they replied that, as Frida is so rarely in Stockholm, she had decided to stay in the Grand Hotel.

As any of you will know meeting any of ABBA is an amazing experience and very moving and just being close to them gives you an great feeling inside, I will wait another year and hope to see our princess again..

You never know who you will meet. Live in hope!

AUDITIONS FOR SPANISH MAMMA MIA! BEGIN

The auditions for the Spanish Production of Mamma Mia! have already begun.

The 11 May edition of newspaper "El País" included an advert saying that they were looking for the whole casting to perform the musical. The auditions are to be carried out during May and June.

The possible date for the prémiere is December 10th, at the Teatro Coliseum, in Madrid. People interested in the casting were addressed to the official website of Mamma Mia! and to www.musicalcasting.com

BJÖRN & BENNY VETO MAMMA MIA! CAST ALBUMS

There will not be a German cast album of Mamma Mia!, nor cast albums from the Dutch and Japanese productions. That was quite a surprise as you could fill in pre-order forms at the Operettenhaus in Hamburg for the album (and supposedly thousands of people did) and the latest news some weeks ago was that the recordings would finally begin in May.

The reason for this decision is quite interesting.

Katja Berg, the German Sophie, states on her homepage www.KatjaBerg.de that the cast was informed that Björn & Benny decided that the London cast recording will remain the only official recording. One reason she mentioned was that Björn & Benny did not want the English versions of the songs to lose their value by being translated and recorded in various non-English languages.

It probably sounds harsher here than it was meant to sound, but still I am mad that any song could lose any value by being translated to German. In this case, the translator Michael Kunze supposedly was begged by Björn to do the translations as he had been so impressed by his achievements over the years. And now his work is not good enough in comparison to the originals. I find that nearly offensive.

Okay, some lines in the translations are a little weird when you really think about them, but still they are *not* worse than the original, and they could be changed very easily. Not to mention the low quality of the the London cast album. The few songs the German cast performed on TV in a medley sounded much better voice-wise and production-wise than the London version.

No doubt this will increase the demand for bootleg recordings of the show :(

HEAR A LITTLE FUNKY MUSIC ;-)

You can hear short clips from Alcazar's new album at www.cdon.se Just check the top right hand corner for Jukebox - Veckans Provlyssning. It's hard to get a proper idea of an album from the ever-so-brief clips but you do get a feel for it. It has a very retro-70s disco flavour to it. Sounds like lots of fun.

The Alcazarized album not only contain's ABBA's "Funky Feet" but also a track from Pet Shop Boys.

And "Funky Feet" is becoming one of the most covered ABBA songs even though ABBA never released it. Svenne and Lotta, The Studs, Arrival and now Alcazar.

Thanks to ABBAMAILer Grant Whittingham, Sydney, Australia

PAUL GETS FUNKY FEET

I have just received a copy of Alcazar's new album and their version of 'Funky Feet' sounds really good (though overall think I still prefer Arrival's cover version). They have added some modern touches and extra vocal parts that would make you think that it was only written this year rather than back in the 1970s.

Also included is their fabulous Melodifestivalen entry 'Not A Sinner Not A Saint'

CARLM MAGNUS PALM'S FAB NEW WEBSITE

Our favourite ABBA author, Carl Magnus Palm, has a brand new website just up and running: http://www.carlmagnuspalm.com/

One exciting new section is a long piece on the creation of the Thank You For The Music box set.

The new site is incredibly well designed and well produced and contains a wealth of information of interest to serious ABBA fans.

MAMMA MIA! - IT'S DENMARK!

According the Danish newspaper BT - Mamma Mia will soon be produced in Denmark. It has not been announced whether it will be Scandinavian or English version. They also write about "Mamma Mia" to be put up in Europe soon, but I don't know what they mean with that, when it's already played in Germany and soon The Netherlands.

AGNETHA "TURNING JAPANESE"?

From Aftonbladet:

Agnetha happy in the bar

The shy former ABBA-singer Agnetha Fältskog was enjoying herself yesterday at Japanese restaurant. She sat in the bar at the Stockholm restaurant Roppongi (known for its good sushi). Pinned between two male partners she was involved in a chat that seemed to be about a quite light subject. She was dressed in trendy trousers with bands/stripes.

The article featured an picture from the opening night at Nalen, with the picture text "Likes japanese food".

BITS'N'PIECES FROM OUR UK CORRESPONDENT

1. Trettondagspolka
This is a new piece of music composed by Benny that was first performed at the Berwaldhallen concert in January 2002, which was broadcast in two parts as Ralph suspects. It was also performed on the BAO (Benny Andersson Orkester) summer tour last year
and will hopefully turn up on the next BAO album as it's a fantastic composition. As far as I know no studio recording has yet been made, but in one interview last year Benny stated that he'd already written eight new pieces for the next BAO album, so this is presumably one of those eight that will be recorded in the future.

2. The current issue of the Swedish magazine 'Se och hör' has an article on Björn and Lena, saying they are looking to sell their home in Djursholm, Stockholm for SEK 30,000,000 SEK. The article states that they moved there in April 1995, but that Emma and Anna now have their own flats, so they are thinking about buying an apartment in the city centre.

3. The UK Daily Telegraph newspaper is offering a Mamma Mia! package in London for £125 pp. which includes a ticket to see the show, overnight accommodation in London, an evening meal, and a backstage tour of the Prince Edward Theatre where 'you get to meet the production staff of the show'.

4. Tomas Ledin released a DVD on 13 May titled 'Just då' which includes some pictures from when he worked with ABBA on the 1979 tour and with Agnetha with 'Never Again' in 1982.

ABBA GO DIGITAL!

According to an article in Sydsvenskan, Universal Music is at the moment digitalising about 4,500 master tapes stored in their archives. The project will be ready in three years and ABBA is among the artists to be digitalised.

EASTENDERS MAMMA MIA! CONNECTION

The newest character in Albert Square ("EastEnders") is the son of the famous Den Watts.

The actor who plays Dennis Rickman, as the character is named, is Nigel Harman. That name rang a bell, although the face didn't, so I went digging.

It turns out that he was in the original London cast of "Mamma Mia!" as Eddie (with make-up applied by none other than Jessie Wallace - Kat Slater also in "EastEnders") AND he was one of the little kids in "ABBAcadabra" at the Lyric in Hammersmith in 1983/84.

MAMMA MIA! - NETHERLANDS UPDATE

If you want a ticket for the Dutch Mamma Mia! you can now make reservations. Bookings opened on May 13.

In other news, there will apparently be a fan premiere.

* Mamma Mia in the Dutch press:
In Noordholland Dagblad on Saturday 10th May, there was a major article about Mamma Mia! in the Netherlands. And in The Telegraaf on Tuesday 6th May, there was another article about the show. It discussed who will be playing the daughter in the Dutch version. She is 23 years old (born in 1979) and her name is Celine Purcell.

CHARTS - WEEK 18

ABBA IN THE NETHERLANDS - UPDATE

In its 6th week ABBA's 2cd set "The Definitive Collection" finally is making an impact (albeit a small one) in the Dutch album top 100.

This week it climbs from no. 51 to no. 39. The index number for this CD is 11 (compared to the index number of 100 for the No. 1 CD "Norah Jones - Come Away With Me").

***

The chart positions for the DVD "The Definitive Collection" in the DVD Music Top 30 are as follows: No. 3 in week 13, No 2 in week 14 and No. 2 again in week 15.

***

Isn't it great when even budget releases are being released and re-released within a few months so serious (some would call it sad, I know ha ha ha) collectors want to buy them all just because of the different packing and such?

Fellow ABBAMAILer Chris Williams wrote about the re-released version of "The Name Of The Game" amongst others the following:

"The ABBA members are central on the cover photo - Björn's arm is no longer cut out of the photo. Nifty watch he has, too :-)"

On my copy of the Spectrum 064 969-2 cd Björn's arm and watch are visible. On the disc itself it says "made in the EU" so I guess there are at least 4 "different" versions out there?

So far I've read about or seen the following
* UK (United Kingdom) - cut version* - Spectrum 064 969-2 includes a customer reply slip (?)

* UK - uncut version* - Spectrum 064 969-2 different picture in booklet and better quality booklet, ABBA logo better visible on the disc itself, customer reply slip has new address on it

* EU (Europe) - uncut version* - Spectrum 064 969-2

* NL (Netherlands) - uncut version* - Rotation 065 626-2

* cut / uncut is referring to whether Björn's arm is on the picture / is not on the picture

GREAT NEWS ON MARIE'S RECOVERY!

In Aftonbladet we're getting great news about the recovery and comeback of Marie Fredriksson.

My translation is as follows:

by Tobias Lidner

Marie's secret comeback - on the new Gessle CD

Marie Fredriksson has made a secret comeback. On the forthcoming Per Gessle solo CD "Mazarin" she sings her first song after her surgery. It was incredibly cool that Marie wanted to do this, says Per Gessle.

In January Marie and Per received the King's Medal of the Eighth Size with Royal Blue Ribbon because of their achievements with Roxette. The reception at the Stockholm Royal Palace was Marie's first public appearance after the removal of her brain tumour in September.

It is true she did also sing her part on the Roxette single "Opportunity nox" some months ago, but this is the first time she does an entire song. The song is called "På promenad genom stan", and is about Halmstad, the hometown of Per Gessle. The recording of this song was made in Stockhom three weeks ago, the rest of the album was recorded last winter. 14 songs, all of them in Swedish.
"Mazarin", his first solo CD since 1997, will be released on the 16th of June.

What about the future for Roxette?

Marie has decided to take this year off, but I guess we'll sit down to discuss our future later this year, Per says. How Marie feels and what she wants to do. She's on her way back to a normal life again, but she's been through a lot, she's had a very rough year. It really feels great to see how she's recovering - she will be back soon.

NANNE & MARIA DELAY ALBUM RELEASES - YET AGAIN

Don't behead the bringer of bad news, but...

Nanne and Maria have postponed their albums yet another time. Nanne's album is planned for a September release at the moment and Maria's album is said to be released "in the autumn".

For those who are planning to se Nanne at Intiman in Stockholm - the show closes for the summer on May 5 and re-opens 18 September.

ANGETHA / GERT - DAILY STAR REPORT

Another article in the UK press - I recognise the name of the author of the article as an ABBA fan, and the headline even has the backwards B in ABBA. This time, Staffan is quoted as well.

Daily Star

ABBA star in new stalker torment

Crazed ex-lover back to haunt her

ABBA star Agnetha Faltskog is again living in fear of a crazed ex-lover who has returned to stalk her.

She believed her nightmare was over when Gert van der Graf (sic) was thrown out of Sweden three years ago. He had been convicted of stalking the blonde star and plaguing her with letters and calls.

But at the weekend, Agnetha's neighbours spotted the 37-year-old engineer skulking outside her remote island cottage in Ekero near Stockholm. And the wacko even boasted: "I'm still in love with her and I will never forget her. I am trying to find somehwere to live near her".
