MUSIKINDUSTRIN ON BENNY'S NEW CD

In today's Musikindustrin there's an In Focus piece about Benny Anderssons Orkester's new CD. Here's my translation:

-------------------------

http://www.musikindustrin.nu/mi/smpage.fwx?page=191&I_FOKUS=4731

Artist: Benny Anderssons Orkester
Title: BAO!
Release date: 2004-06-23
Record company: [Mono Music/Sony Music]

Three years ago the Swedish summer to a degree belonged to Benny Anderssons Orkester, who with it's tour and album attracted a lot of attention. Now the popular and beloved constellation is back with a new album, BAO! [Mono Music/Sony Music], and this summer they're touring again. Judging by the popular single Du är min man, they can compete with Gyllene Tider this summer.

Benny Andersson has once again gathered his Orkester, and with the lovely singer Helen Sjöholm in the group, the popularity will increase. She sings on the album's first single Du är min man, with lyrics by Björn Ulvaeus, a classic dance song that is being frequently played on the radio.

Benny has composed all the music for the album, and it's a very mixed collection of music that he presents, from danceband songs to all kinds of traditional dances via movie-like music with a flavor of Italy as well as Balkan in a few of the tracks.

With it's large and highly competent constellation of musicians, there's more variety, and on BAO! they take you along on different musical journeys with roots reaching deep down through decades of Swedish and international music history. The album offers and impressive collection of songs, and most remind you of summer and sun.

Five of the songs have Swedish lyrics, and the ones who have contributed them, except for Ulvaeus in Du är min man and Midnattsdans, are Ylva Eggehorn in Saknadens rum and Kärlekens tid as well as Peter Dalle in Skenbart. Helen Sjöholm sing all five songs, and Midnattsdans is a duet with Kalle Moraeus.

In August it's time for this summer's tour, so far with six planned performances, and on the 10th of August they participate in the season's last Allsång på Skansen. BAO! surely is many Swedes' soundtrack this summer.

PERFECTBEAT.COM REVIEW AGNETHA SINGLE

Agnetha's CD 2-single of "When You Walk In The Room" is being featured on
the American DJ/dance music site Perfectbeat.com and here's their review of
the single:

---------------------------------

http://perfectbeat.com/product_info.php?products_id=5050467409422&PHPSESSID=ddee5b29377f60afcff9d66f0fe7f2d5

The formula to a successful sequel to a blockbuster is always to do the exact same thing again, but "more". And Agnetha rocks it. There's an honesty to the lyrics that when combined with the exuberance of Agnetha's vocals leaves you a bit stunned. Lots of little 17 year old pop stars may say similar things in their top 40 stuff, but when the same is delivered by a woman in her 50s, it comes across as comforting and powerful simplicity as opposed to empty and cliché,. Almighty lend themselves to this single as
well, and deliver a hands-in-the-air treatment reminds you why they've been around so long. The Soundfactory Club Anthem has a harder, Junior-esque feel but like Rauhofer's mix of Christina Aguilera's Beautiful, remains uplifting through the dark opacity. The video is included as well, which has the same duotone visuals are the single covers.

Abba's The last video will be released on DVD. The video that was shown during the semi final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest features doll-sized version of Agnetha, Frida, Bjorn and Benny and the real Abba members in cameo roles.

Fans of Swedish Abba have a new item they can add to their collection. The last video, the animation movie featuring doll-sized versions of Agnetha, Frida, Bjorn and Benny performing Abba tracks in their bid to secure a record deal, will be released on DVD. Due to copyrights the movie was not included on the official DVD of the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest.

ABBA - The last video will be released by Polydor and is scheduled to be available in the shops from 5th July on. The DVD also includes a picture gallery and more extras such as four Abba videos: Take a chance on me, Dancing Queen, Waterloo and The winner takes it all.

SNAPS FOR OLD TERRY!

Dear old Terry Wogan continues to be a shining light. He played Agnetha's When You Walk In The Room at about 7.50 this morning on radio 2, though as usual he announced her in his 'cod' Swedish accent.

However, this isn't the only way he's helping. By going to
www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/wogan/ you can not only listen to the show again but also see the sleeve for My Colouring Book which is used as a link for all the tracks played on the show each day.

Give that man a medal!

BAO! SINGLE - NO DATE YET

There is still no release date for the single release of "Du är min man"
from the BAO! album, although the catalogue number will be MMCD-S 128.

However, there is currently a 1-track promo single circulating, with an identical picture sleeve to the album. The length of the track is 3'40.

DEAN SAYS: DISAPPOINTED? NO WAY!

Seen a few comments basically saying how disappointing Agnetha's latest
chart showing is. I couldn't agree less.

In this weeks top 75 there were 27 entries (It doesn't say whether some of them are re-entries), that is over 1/3 of the chart!

There are 17 entries below Agnetha, including the latest new release from David Bowie.
This is her second single from the album, which will almost always fare worse than the first release.

This is still her second best placing on the singles chart in the UK, ever.

While many of these older acts may still have a loyal fan base, many of the rest of the population see them as old has-beens still trying to make a name for themselves (which we know is not the case).

For proof of how well older acts do, just look at the UK top 30 albums. over 1/3 of the acts have been around for 15 or more years! The older acts sell albums, not singles, it's that simple. And that is also where the money is, in albums. Her latest album has done very well, it is her first to be ccredited, and her first to be top 20.

To sum it up, #34 is a respectable achievement for a second single from an act that has been around for over 30 years, and asong that has already been a UK top 50 hit four times already, this is its fifth! And its second highest placing!
Searchers - #3, 1964
Child - #38, 1978
Paul Carrack - #48, 1987
Status Quo - #34, 1995.
Agnetha Faltskog - #34, 2004.

Are you disappointed now?

BBC CONFUSED: ROOM...DOOR???

I listened to the BBC chart show and they played "When You Walk In The Room". debuting at #34. They had a great mention of the album. The only disappointment was that the host referred to the song as "When You Walk In The DOOR" twice.

NEWS FROM SINGAPORE

Agnetha's single "If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind" (Almighty Mix) has made it into Singapore's dance radio station WKRZ 91.3 FM chart at No. 1 after six weeks of action!

The single moved steadily from No. 12 to No. 6. It was in at No. 3 last week before topping the charts at No. 1 this week. The chart is based on radio air-play and listener requests.

The station's weblink follows. It'll probably be updated to reflect the new
status of the chart by Wednesday at the latest.

A PERSONAL NOTE FROM GRAEME READ

A note to ABBA fans from ABBAMAIL's Graeme Read:

"As I write this, I am about to head off to bed here in Sydney, Australia. In a few hours time, on the other side of the world, we will know Agnetha's chart position for this week.

Reflecting on the amazing work that has been done by people across the world - particularly in the UK - to support YOUR FÄLTSKOG NEEDS YOU - I really felt that something special has been triggered by this campaign. Something special in ABBA fans themselves.

I've been in organised ABBA fandom since I was 15 - and that's almost thirty years ago - during that time I've seen every type of selfish, backstabbing, stealying, cheating, lying, manipulative, bullying, rip-off behaviour that you could ever imagine being displayed between people calling themselves 'ABBA fans'.

ABBA's music may have brought a joyous force for enjoyment and enlightenment into our lives but it has also been responsible for bringing out the very worst in many fans. The way some fans choose to interact with other ABBA fans has shown the absolute worst personal qualities in these people. And it isn't just the fans who are all about "me, me, me" 24/7. The insecurity and feelings of inadequacy of these people has often been chanelled straight in to their ABBA fandom and it isn't a good look. Not at all.

That the ABBA fan community continues to exist despite the activities and influence of these people is a miracle. And yes, these people have been around since Day 1 of the ABBA story, but their influence has grown exponentially since the arrival of the internet.

You may see them administering policies on official abba web sites, auctioning rip-off stuff on Ebay, attending fan events with dollar signs in their eyes or just spreading a negative and destructive influence via the many fan web sites and forums on the internet.

But wherever there is the ABBA fan community, there are also wonderful, generous, supportive, open and inspirational people. People that make you proud to be part of this crazy sub-culture we call "ABBA fandom".

And the great thing about the YOUR FÄLTSKOG NEEDS YOU campiagn is that the pendulum of influence in ABBA fandom well and truly swung the other way. NICE people took over for a change and spontaneously rose to take matters into their own hands. To do something good for Agnetha and for their fellow ABBA fans.

Those nice, genuine fans read the guidelines for the campaign and went out to make a real difference. It was life affirming - the number of UK fans who spontaneously said "I can help by offering to buy copies on behalf of fans from other countries where the single isn't being released. And I can do this efficiently, effectively because I want to help Agnetha's chart position and do something nice for fellow fans at the same time."

WOW! I had to take a step back, take a deep breath and say "okay, this is why I'm still involved in organised ABBA fandom after thirty years! These people are what the community is all about!"

So this crazy and heartfelt campaign to help get a record on the charts and in the British media had another, unintended affect - it brought out the best in many of us for once. We worked together towards a common goal and actively used our skills, abilities and cold hard cash to bring some excitement, some good feeling and a little love and friendship to the fan world.

We showed a side of ourselves that we should be damn proud of. And we had fun doing it!

I say to those who actively participated in the campaign: you shared the love people - and in doing so your reflected light has shone positively over the whole fan community. Give yourselves a pat on the back and a hug - you all deserve it! And you revived my faith in the basic goodness of this ABBA fan movement that I've been part of for three decades.

Whether Agnetha gets a great chart position on Sunday night in London is almost a secondary concern to me now. That you changed the whole perception of what fans can do, will do and that you spontaneously helped your fellow fans - well, to me, that's the real #1 result of this campaign.

I thank each and every one of you who participated in this campaign and especially to those of you who helped your fellow fans.

As Young Mr. Grace would say "You've all done very well."

And if you didn't participate and you could have. Or if you were a naysayer - shame on you. Your negativity will only serve to come back on you in the future. Step back and let the nice guys do their thing without hindrance for a change.

UK ABBA FANS SEE AGNETHA'S TV SPECIAL

Just watched the Agnetha documentary on VH1 and here are my thoughts.

It was repeated on VH1 thus giving more fans a chance to see it. And VH1 seemed to be having an ABBA week - lots of showings for Abba: Greatest Hits.

I enjoyed the documentary very much and, unlike some reviewers, I enjoyed the handheld footage. In fact I preferred it - there was character in Agnetha's face in contrast to the sequence where she was walking in the woods for 'Past, Present and Future' where she has been so digitally washed that all the expression has gone from her face. The same is true of 'What now my love'.

Another observation - especially for the Modeators at Abba - The Site - has anyone noticed the Tom of Finland book on Agnetha's side table (next to Lotte Blome)?

Clearly Agnetha really does love her Gay followers!!!

LAST VIDEO ON I-TUNES

The music download service, iTunes, was launch this week in Europe and ABBA's "Our Last Video" is an exclusive on the site. For anyone with iTunes and access to the UK Music Store you can view the video by following the link on the front page of the Music Store. FAN REPORT: Mamma Mia German Cast Album Release Party

Mamma Mia German Cast Album Release Party

On Monday I attended the Mamma Mia! Hamburg cast album release party. At very short notice I received a ticket for the party, which was reserved for press and TV people and invited guests and some celebrities. 250 people had been invited I was told.

It started at 7pm in the cafe Schöne Aussichten ("Beautiful Views") situated in the large park in Hamburg's city. It was warm and sunny, a perfect day for such an event in such a location. The cafe itself is rather small, but it has a large terrace, where two huge tents were set up, one of them held the little stage. Mamma Mia! posters everywhere as well as and waiters with finger-food and drinks. That made me feel like home immediately.

The motto of the show as "White Nights", so guests were asked to wear white clothes only. Of course only half of them did. Well, I don't have plain white clothes either and didn't want to buy white clothes just for this occasion. Actually it looked like a nurse convention. Except for some other German musical stars (hardly known to the wider public, only to musical fans), I spotted only one celebrity, a comedian that I usually don't find funny.

Host of the show was Kim Fisher, a German singer. She had performed Money Money Money in the ABBA Jubiläumsshow in Stuttgart in March (on German TV Easter Sunday), which was okay, but nothing spectacular. I had never heard her hosting a show, but she was quite good and funny. She introduced the artists, the songs, and in the beginning the author of the German lyrics. When asked about the writing of the German lyrics, he said that he had been sitting with Björn who would play the songs on his guitar and sing the German lyrics and decide if he thought that the German words (that he understood most of) would fit.

The party was actually called "Mamma Mia Unplugged", as the cast presented some songs from the show in an unplugged version. Of course the three leading ladies were there, one of the dads, Sky and Sophie, and about ten people of the cast. The leading ladies were not always together on the stage, depending on the song, but the rest of the cast was there all the time doing backing vocals.

They did (all in German) Mamma Mia, Does your Mother Know, Take A Chance On Me, The Winner Takes It All, Lay All Your Love On Me, Super Trouper and Mamma Mia. For the last two songs, the ladies put on their silvery Super Trouper outfits from the show, for the rest of the time they and the cast and the band wore white clothes, sponsored b Otto.de, one of Germany's biggest mail-order and online retailers for clothes (mentioned only once though).

The concert part of the show was 55 minutes long and very well received by the audience. It ended at around 9.30pm, the cast went into a separate room to get changed (obviously Otto.de wanted the white clothes back clean and unwrinkled) and they mingled with the crowd.

The release of the CD was scheduled for the same day. But as the pre-orders were so numerous, Universal decided to postpone the release for one week, in order to be able to fulfill all orders at the same time on the first day. Okay, that was the official version. The inoffical: the tracklisting on the backside of the CD cover is incorrect, the Entr'acte of the second act was not listed, so the whole thing had to be changed and printed again.

Somebody said that they had several boxes with those CDs at the venue, but really only press and radio and TV people got a copy. Not even the cast had seen the CD before and were looking through the booklet to see who was in it and who was not.

The CD itself is a live-recording from mid April.

At 11pm I left the party as we had to drive back for two hours. Overall, it was a nice evening.

Thanks to (a friend of) ABBAMAILer Erik Menkens, Wangerland, Germany

HELLO!

There was an article of note in the UK Daily Mail (15 June). This two page article focuses on four of ABBA's fans, one of which is ABBAMAILer Julie Rickwood. All four are also pictured, with Julie in her 1979 tour outfit, and interviewed about their experiences as a fan.

I hadn't heard of two of the other UK fans before, but one is Nicola Knight, who named her new baby Abba last year.

Also, in the current issue of Hello magazine, there is a page on the Mamma Mia! gala on 10 June, with a picture of Judy Craymer, Frida and Björn and the royal guests.

DOTMUSIC GIVES AGNETHA SINGLE THUMBS UP

Agnetha Faltskog - 'When You Walk In The Room'
(Friday June 18, 2004 11:11 AM )

Released on 14/06/04
Label: WEA

The critical rehabilitation of Abba from kitsch novelties to chinstroke-worthy geniuses is as welcome as it is appropriate. Inevitably, though, the kudos have been bestowed on the band’s beardy songwriting half, all their flares’n’hair fashion crimes forgiven. At the same time, the view persists that any random pair of Scandinavian babes in teensy shorts could’ve served up the warbling.

Amongst all this bigging-up-the-boys theorising, it’s awfully satisfying to note that one of the brightest jewels in Agnetha Faltskog’s first album in yonks is not only stone-cold great rather than merely good, but a triumphant collaboration between two women. Doing the songwriting talents of Brill Building classicist Jackie De Shannon full justice in a big, swelling, drum-driven, horn-brightened production, Faltskog’s joyous delivery sounds absolutely timeless.

The song’s not new, the arrangement is gloriously, deliberately retro and Agnetha’s probably no longer wearing hotpants. But even with no beards involved, this is easily a match for the stuff Bjorn and Benny got all the chinstroking credit for.

PUPPET VIDEO: IAN SAYS NO, NO, NO

ABBAMAIL's Ian Cole says HMV UK are mistaken in announcing a release date and accepting pre-release orders for "Our Last Video".

He says that, while the DVD may be released later in the year, there are no plans by Universal to release it in the next couple of months.

So perhaps you'd better save your pennies for another day?

R-R-R-R-R-R-RAAAAAAAAAGE

The video for "If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind" is included in the RAGE (ABC TV Australia) playlist again this weekend. It will be played between 05.30 and 06.00 on Saturday morning. Very nice to see it scheduled a second time which hopefully indicates at least some notable degree of interest from viewers of RAGE.

Also, while driving to work this morning the Almighty radio edit of "If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind" was played on JOY Melbourne, high profile community gay & lesbian radio station. JOY is the only radio station I am aware of in Melbourne that has given anything from "My Colouring Book" any kind of air play. The album was their feature album for the week of its release...which included giving copies away for the week and featuring tracks from it.

FASCISTS: ABBASITE MODERATORS STRIKE AGAIN

This just in from an ABBAMAIL web site visitor who also frequents the official abbasite forums:

"I do not know what to do or who to ask for help. I am sorry I am writing you to this e-mail, but I thought may be you could give me feedback on what Abbasite has done to me.

I posted the radio station links that you posted to help Agnetha. I credited you, of course, saying that I have obtained them from ABBAMAIL. The name of my topic was, "If you are a fan, do something!" My nickname in abbasite is "shooshah". I just noticed they had removed my topic & read this e-mail. Is this true? I don't think it is true that I cannot post it. Please let me know if you have a chance.

Thanks so much.

From: "ABBA The Site Moderator team"

Shooshah,

Your topic regarding emailing radio stations to get them to play Agnetha's music has been removed from the forums at ABBA The Site.

Although it is appreciated that you are only trying to help advance Agnetha's standings in the charts; it is against Site Policy to post an email address for anyone without their permission.

Kind regards,

Universal music and the moderator team of ABBA - The Site

================

ABBAMAIL's Comment: "Shooshah, I think they are being ridiculous. It is more a power-trip rather than an actual administering of the rules of the list. Radio station email addresses are not private email addresses.

I also think they hate the fact that ABBAMAIL gets mentioned on the site so much - so any chance to remove a reference to ABBAMAIL is something that makes them happy.

Sorry but not much you can do - Universal Music don't care about what's really happening at the site.

I will publicise this on our news page and perhaps get some reaction from people.

AGNETHA MIDWEEK: 35/24

Confusion reigns over Agnetha's mid week chart position. Now we hear the true figure may be #24. We also hear that she has sold 9000 copies that does not including HMV sales or Amazon (on-line sales presumably).

We have also received figures for other singles released this week in the UK and, if they are correct, Agnetha would certainly be higher than #35.

Unfortunately, we can't give you an absolute answer either way. However, my gut feeling is that When You Walk In The Room should be higher than #35 with our co-ordinated campaign effort across the U.K.

Sunday night (UK time) will be the proof of the pudding. Keep the faith and keep buying that single (for your friends, relatives, lovers etc.) But no more than three at a time of course!

DIEGO OFFERS HELP TO NON UK FANS

This is from ABBAMAIL web site regular Diego Lopez in St Albans, UK:

"Put a message on ABBAMAIL saying I will buy anyone a copy and send by post as long as it's through me and from a chart shop, then they'll know it has contributed to her chart position, I'll keep nipping in and out from St. Albans, Watford, Luton and get them 3 at a time. We still have 4 days. I am offering myself as a "runner". This is the only week we have. Let's maximise it.

Diego Lopez"

Diego's email address is: diego@arrival.worldonline.co.uk

Write directly to him if you want him to get copies of the single on your behalf.

THE INCREDIBLE INVISIBLE SINGLE

Okay, so she's #35 mid week. What a fucked result.

Still, it wouldn't even have reached that without you good people fighting the good fight!

Reports sent to me indicate that a lot of the smaller stores haven't bothered stocking the single at all. And that, once you leave London, some of the major outlets have only stocked a few copies of each. And once they've been sold, they're gone!

It is a bit difficult to have a successful single if you can't actually find anywhere to buy the fucking thing!

Let's now concentrate on the next couple of days. We made a tactical mistake by not realising that only the first 3 copies bought in one transaction count towards the charts. It would have been nice if someone had told me prior to this week!

But anyway, we have to keep going....get out there and buy some more copies for those lovely friends, pen pals, family members etc. But SPREAD YOUR MONEY AROUND - one copy here, two copies there and so on. If you have 5 record shops where you live, then spread your purchases around.

Let's make sure the FÄLTSKOG is the goddamn British chart this Sunday, people.

Oh, and how about writing email and letters to media outlets that have helped screw Agnetha over by not even giving WHEN YOU WALK IN THE ROOM a tiny bit of support. F****** C****

URGENT RE AGNETHA: NOT MORE THAN 3 AT ONCE

THIS IS AN URGENT MESSAGE TO ALL PEOPLE PARTICIPATING IN THE YOUR FÄLTSKOG NEEDS YOU CAMPAIGN:

DO NOT BUY MORE THAN THREE COPIES OF THE SINGLE AT ANY ONE STORE - WE HAVE RECEIVED ADVICE THAT ONLY THE FIRST THREE COPIES SOLD AT ONE TIME WILL COUNT FOR THE CHART. THE REST DO NOT COUNT FOR ANYTHING. THIS IS APPARENTLY TO PREVENT "CHART RIGGING".

AS WE ADVISED ON OUR CAMPAIGN PAGE - SPREAD YOUR SALES AROUND BETWEEN SHOPS - DON'T BLOW IT BY BUYING ALL YOUR COPIES IN ONE SHOP AT THE ONE TIME.

AGNETHA & THE CLIP ON THE CD

I decided to put CD2 into my PC and lo and behold Agnetha loaded. I don't think anyone
ever said there'd be a DVD so god knows why I was surprised but of course it's an enhanced CD a la Djupa Andetag.

First of all Agnetha's name slides in from the left accompanied by four headshots in the style of the singles, each one in a different coloured shade), then the song title drops from the top and the video begins its playback to the right of the screen. I'm not sure of the resolution but it's pretty low. There's an option to blow it up to full screen but it comes out pretty blocky if you do that.

Anyway, it's a nice video. Although it's small it's perfectly formed with low compression and a 44 MB file size in mpeg format. Agnetha is having a lot of fun in the clip, isn't she? Mind you, I never thought I'd see the day Agnetha did air guitar!
OK, this is absolutely IT for the day.

AGNETHA SINGLE - REPORT FROM LONDON

As most, if not all, of us know, "When You Walk In The Room" was released as
a single in the UK today. I now have both of the UK CD releases, and can confirm the track listing as follows:-

CD1 - Green Sleeve - £1.99

1. Original Version 3.35
2. Radio Version 3.18

CD2 - Orange Sleeve - £2.99

1. Original Version 3.35
2. Soundfactory Radio Edit 3.46
3. Soundfactory Club Anthem 8.42
4. Soundfactory Dub Instrumental 8.39
5. Almighty Mix 6.34
6. Almighty Dub 6.32
7. Video

So, the only versions of the song that I know of that aren't being released in the UK are the Soundfactory Dark Dub and, once again, the Almighty Radio Edit, although they are both on the Swedish mix CD single, which I bought from ABBF for £5.00 (!!) at their stand at ABBAFest on Saturday.

Let's hope that the song goes Top 30 on Sunday, although with zero publicity, etc., I fear that without our help it will be lucky to do even that.

BJÖRN ASKS SWEDISH GOVERNMENT FOR HELP

According to a short article in today's Metro, Björn has asked the Swedish Government for help to save the Polar studio. Here's my translation:

------------------

http://www3.metro.se/content/acrobat/stockholm/SESTO_20040601_A_Metro.pdf

Abba-Björn asks the government to save the studio

Now Björn Ulvaeus asks for the government's support to save the Polar studio. Increased rent has forced the classic studio on Kungsholmen, where among others Abba and Led Zeppelin have made recordings, to close.

The cultural minister Marita Ulvskog's media representative Hans Ånell confirms that there has been discussions about the subject.

- The department is looking into if we can support the studio in some way. The thought is that it should be preserved as a museum or a popular cultural building. It is something which has had a great influence on popular culture.

Parts of the furnishings have already been auctioned off to Abba-fans but according to Hans Ånell they hope to be able to save what is left.

Björn Ulvaeus doesn't want to make a comment about the discussions.

POLISH ABBA UPDATE

After the moderate promo campaign for "My Colouring Book", a new ABBA-related campaign has started. This time, the advertised product is "The Definitive Collection" the Sound&Vision edition and the medium is a network of 'Gold Hits'-type radio stations, in Warsaw it's Radio Pogoda. It is the same network that had The Definitive Collection on its billboards early last year.

The radio spot predictably starts from "Dancing Queen" and continues with a few other songs, meanwhile, a guy says "Universal Music Poland and Radio [Pogoda] present (...) available at good music stores as of June". Since around 2001, ABBA, alongside other 70s music, has been reduced to airplay in radio stations of this kind - the commercial
giants quit playing music from before 1980 altogether. So, it's quite natural the product is only advertised on Radio Pogoda and its clones elsewhere.

But anyway, this is the first time that ABBA recordings are actually being advertised in Poland, at least since I became a fan in 1992. Until this year, all ABBA and related releases were ignored by media with an astonishing consistency, or rather, there was never a real advertising campaign. That three-CD collection from 1999 wasn't even released here, though I did see the ad for it - on MTV Europe, widely available in
Poland. Mind you, MTV Poland wouldn't start until the summer of 2000.

You can win the The Definitive Collection thingy from the radio stations - you just have to call them at a certain time and say which ABBA songs were played after 10 a.m. BTW, ABBA is played by them all the time without any special occasions - it's around one song every two hours. The less expected songs I've heard in the past few years were "Head Over Heels" and..."Happy Hawaii", which apparently was a hit in Poland back in the seventies, when we didn't have a regular music market anyway :-)

Right, so that was the news of the week from Poland. Meanwhile, I still haven't seen the "In Concert" DVD in Polish music shops...

D-DAY BECOMES A-DAY

I was reading through some of the news reports on the D-Day commemorations in Normandy - and there was even an ABBA mention.

Prior to the ceremonies there was a 'festival of military music', with several different countries making their own contributions. When it was Poland's turn, they apparently played a medley of ABBA tunes, including Dancing Queen and Fernando.

So yes, ABBA gets everywhere...

DAILY MAIL INTERVIEW - THE HIGHLIGHTS

Here's some of the more interesting points from the Daily Mail interview with Björn (5 June).

About Agnetha and the Mamma Mia! 5th anniversary celebration:

"We have a grandchild, Tilda, who is three, so I see Agnetha at family
occasions. She didn't come to the reunion because she did not want to
travel. It isn't fair to say Agnetha is a recluse - she's seen at
restaurants in Stockholm. But she does not like travelling, especially
flying."

On the divorce

"We were both certain divorce was the right thing to do. I'd met my second
wife before Agnetha moved out, but had not had a date with her. Then I was
invited to this party, and there she was".

On meeting Agnetha at the recording of a TV show

"She was sitting in a restaurant near the studio when I walked in. I was
very shy, but for some reason felt I just had to talk to her, so I sat down
and started chatting."

Judy Craymer on Mamma Mia!:

Recalling the time they went to a hotel for a creative session:

" I told everyone to have sandwiches for lunch and stick to the set dinner
menu, but then Björn ordered one of the most expensive wines on the list,
followed by several vintage brandies. My budget immeddiately went out of the
window by several hundred pounds".

About the 5th anniversary celebration:

"It had taken me ages, but I had persauded Bjorn, Benny and Frida - but
unfortunately not Agnetha - to go on stage. "You will speak to the audience,
won't you Frida?" I had begged her. When the time came, Bjorn and Benny went
on without her. I thought she had changed her mind - then she came on,
wearing only one glamourous sandal. The other had got caught in the floor
off-stage. "You can tell it's been a long time since I've been on stage,"
she joked and she brought the house down".

ABBA No. 1 IN VINYL!

It went unnoticed last week, because it is not a chart that is published online or in the magazine. Nevertheless Alan Jones (of Music Week) makes reference to the 7" Singles Chart (ie. old-fashioned vinyl 7" chart):

"Two new entries to the singles chart this week are triggered by 30th anniversaries - one good, one bad. Abba's 1974 Eurovision triumph is marked by the re-release of maiden chart-topper Waterloo, which debuts at 20, while the increasingly legendary Nick Drake - who died prematurely in 1974 - charts with his first ever single, a newly assembled version of a song called Magic, which makes its bow at 32. Both are available on 7-inch
as well as compact disc, and help the 7-inch share of the market to a new eight year high of 2.8813%, narrowly beating the 2.8563% high it reached a fortnight ago. The Abba single tops the 7-inch chart, with Drake second, Muse third, Brand New fourth, PJ Harvey fifth and The Others sixth - all with new entries."

GERMAN ROLLING STONE GIVES AGNETHA ALBUM THUMBS UP!

My Colouring Book receives 4 out of 5 stars in the german edition of Rolling Stone. The review is very positive and the reviewer praises her voice !

In the charts (published every month and reflecting the taste of all of Rolling Stone's team she enters at number 6. I think this is fantastic. Rolling Stone is not the sort of Magazine that I would have expected such a great review from.

But it is not so surprising if you consider that Germany- very reluctant at first- now seems to have embraced Agnetha's album. (Can't count the number of people I know who actually bought the album :-)

BENNY DEALS THE DECK

Nothing new in this shortie from Svenska Dagbladet but anyway here we go:

***************************

Benny Andersson deals the deck

Withing three weeks BAO! Arrives. It's the second record with Benny Anderssons Orkester. The bandleader has written 14 new songs, and four of these are performed by Helen Sjöholm, and a fifth Midnattsdans (Midnight Dance) she is singing a duet with Kalle Moréus.

It's a very diverse style among these songs, as well as on the first record. But this time the orchestra have a lot more to do, says Benny Andersson. The lyrics were written by Björn Ulvaeus (two), Ylva Eggerhorn (two) and Peter Dalle. And in August there's going to be a tour, premiering at Skansen on the 6th.

ABBAFEST MAKES METRO

On page 23 of last Monday's edition of Metro (www.metro.se), there was a story about the ABBA-event in Brighton this weekend and Vaughan Davies is interviewed. Here's my translation:

----------------

Abba to be celebrated in Brighton 30 years later

Big fan arranges a three day long celebration in memory of the Eurovision victory in 1974.

Thirty years after the victory in the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo", Abba's music and stage outfits return to Brighton. This weekend fans from all over the world will celebrate the Swedish popgroup for three days.

The event in the British coastal city is called "Abba Fest 2004" and it's estimated that thousands of fans will celebrate Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid.

Behind the event is Vaughan Davies, travel agent and active within The Official International Agnetha Benny Björn Frida Fan Club, and David Courtney, songwriter and producer for among others Leo Sayer, Roger Daltrey and Paul McCartney.

- A year ago I contacted David Courtney on account of the Walk of Fame which he created in Brighton. It's similar to the one in Hollywood, with plaques on the street. Since Abba won there in 1974, they were important. So we decided to do something because of the 30th anniversary, says Vaughan Davies.

Carl Magnus Palm will promote his book "Benny's Road to Abba" (see picture), an English translation of the recently released "Cadillac madness - den otroliga berättelsen om The Hep Stars". There will be a fan club gathering.

The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will perform "Abba - The Symphony". The Abba imitators Bjorn again will perform, and on stage bands from back then, such as Rubettes, Boney M and Showaddywaddy, will perform the songs from the charts of 1974.

- Furthermore Owe Sandström, Abba's clothing designer, will be there and he's bringing the "Waterloo" outfits.

The event ends with a walking tour of the city where you get to follow the group's stay in Brighton 1974; Brighton Dome; Brighton Beach and the hotels where they stayed and had their champagne breakfast.

Benny Andersson writes Peking's Olympic Opening Ceremony-song

EXPRESSEN
-----------------------------

Benny Andresson writes Peking's Olympic Games -song

Benny Andersson is now about to write the inauguration music to the Olympic Games in Peking 2008.

If the plans turn out well the Chinese superstar Wei Wei will perform the ABBA-star's song in fron of millions of TV-viewers.

- They are having discussions about it at the moment.

He is one of the music world's biggest stars. Today, 30 years after ABBA's victory at the Schlager-EM in Brighton the quartet sells more records that the competitors that are active now.

Benny Andersson's and Björn Ulvaeus' musicals "Chess", "Mamma Mia!" and "Kristina Från Duvemåla" are huge successes among the audience.

Asia's Whitney Houston

Wei Wei is China's biggest female star through the years. She has been called Asia's answer to Whitney Houston and has sold more than 150 million records all around Asia.

In the home country Wei Wei can't go outside her door without life guards. If she show up on the street it causes chaos. Some yars ago she and her husband, the American composer Michael J Smith, moved to Sweden and Skåne.

And that can now lead to that Wei Wei and Benny Andersson with joint powers will create the inauguration song for Olympic Games in Peking 2008.

Wei Wei is used to all this - 1996 she sang "I Belive In China" during the final of Olympic Games in Atlanta. Then her husband had written the song.

Billions of TV-viewers

- Benny is really keen on this mission. There probably isn't one composer in the world that would say no to writing the music. The exposure the performance means is almost unbeatable. Billions of TV-viewers follows the broadcast, says a source.

According to the source Benny Andersson and Wei Wei supposedly have met and discussed doing a Olympic Games song together.

Henrik Barck, manager for Wei Wei says:

- It's correct that she and Benny has had a meeting. But there are also American song writers involved in this. Where this lands in the end we don't know at the moment. At the moment we lie low with all this.

HARD TO BE AN AGNETHA FAN IN STOCKHOLM

ABBAMAILers have had trouble purchasing Agnetha's new single WHEN YOU WALK IN THE ROOM from Stockholm stores. The single was released on June 9...

Åhlens had had one copy of the jewel case version with the remixes and this had already been sold at lunchtime. The other stores (Mega, Mix, Skivhuset etc.) did not even have a single copy of the remixes. Mega had the boring one with the album version and the radio edit and so did Skivhuset whereas Mix and Megastore did not even have it at all. Amateurs!

I went to Åhléns City today as well, and asked for the maxi single. The guy said that they had had 11 copies ordered earlier, and when I asked - "have you ordered any more?".

"Ah, yes. One."
