PINOCCHIO SPEAKS!

Pinocchio, oops I mean Görel Hanser, has issued a statement about the ABBA, oops I mean Björn and Benny, song "Crush On You" that BAO will be recording at the official site.

-----------------------------------

The truth about the "new ABBA song"

'Crush On You' was written during the ABBA years, but was never intended for the group, says ABBA spokeswoman Görel Hanser.

The recent news about Benny Andersson's current band, Benny Anderssons orkester (BAO) recording a song entitled 'Crush On You', written by Benny together with Björn Ulvaeus in 1979, has raised speculation that it is an unreleased ABBA song.
This is not true, according to Benny and Björn's spokeswoman, Görel Hanser. "This song was never meant for ABBA but it was written during the ABBA years," says Ms Hanser. "It has never been recorded by ABBA or anyone else."

Benny Anderssons orkester (The Benny Andersson Orchestra) is currently in the studio recording a new album, which will include 'Crush On You'. There are also tentative plans for an English-language album for the international market.
-------------------------

I don't know about anyone else but Görel has told so many lies over the years so I don't believe her here. She is probably trying to head off fans demanding that the ABBA version be released. If Björn and Benny wrote this during the ABBA years then I am sure it would have been intended for ABBA. I can believe that it was never recorded (but again I don't trust Görel) but if they had been happy with the song then it most definitely would have been recorded by ABBA. Björn and Benny were very mean when it came to giving away songs to other artists, for example the Bang-A-Boomerang" debacle.

Remember, this is the woman who says that "Just Like That" was not an ABBA song despite there being three ABBA versions in circulation and press releases written at the time by the woman herself saying that the song was going to be on an ABBA album.

I am looking forward to hearing the song though, especially if it's sung by Helen Sjöholm.

MORE ON KRISTINA COURT CASE

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/106831.html

ABBA's Ulvaeus and Andersson Win Kristina Court Battle; Show Looks to Broadway

Hopes for a Broadway production of the Swedish musical Kristina — by ABBA songwriters Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson — have increased after the duo won a recent court decision.

Writer Carl-Johan Seth claimed royalty rights to Kristina from Duvemala because he wrote the first draft of the show, which concerns 19th-century Swedish immigrants who are forced by poverty to forge a new life in Minnesota.

Ulvaeus and Andersson — on whose ABBA songs the musical Mamma Mia! is based — countered that Seth's script was unusable and that director Lars Rudolfsson and playwright Jan Mark had to write an alternative version.

The show's plot is based on four novels by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg. Kristina from Duvemala premiered at the Malmo Music Theatre on Oct. 7, 1995, and has transferred to Gothenburg's Opera House and to Stolkholm's Cirkus Theatre.

According to the BBC, the court ruled that Seth is not entitled to royalties from past or future productions of the musical.

For the American version of the musical, called Kristina, Ulvaeus collaborated with Les Misérables lyricist Herbert Kretzmer. The show was recently workshopped in New York, and the Tony-nominated Alice Ripley (Side Show) has reportedly been given the nod for one of the principal roles. The Broadway Theatre, currently hosting The Color Purple, is considered to be a possible venue for the musical.

Seth's lawyer has said his client will appeal.

INTERNATIONAL RELEASE FOR BAO?

The same Aftonbladet article that mentions that BAO are recording an unfinished 'ABBA' song also mentions that there could be an international release of a BAO compilation CD.

BAO have recorded English versions of ”Du är min man” and ”Det är vi ändå” among others. Later, a BAO collection will be released internationally.

- In case there's any interest, says Benny Andersson.

BENNY RECORDS 'ABBA' SONG

This article can be found in today's Aftonbladet:
http://www.aftonbladet.se/vss/noje/story/0,2789,1031070,00.html

Benny records a new ABBA-song

Aftonbladet in the studio when - BAO releases the supergroup's unknown song

For 142 weeks "Du är min man" has been on the Svensktoppen. Meanwhile the song is setting a record, Benny Anderssons Orkester are in recording studio recording new favourites.

Like an unreleased ABBA-song from 1979.

Two songs on the forthcoming CD are sung in english.

- One is titled "Crush On You", says Benny Andersson. Björn and I were working on this one 28 years ago, but the song was never completed. Now we have finished it.

You never recorded it with ABBA?

- No, nothing out of this song.

There's a lot of singing on the new BAO CD, that will be released in the autumn. Helen Sjöholm and Tommy Körberg are the voices.

- We got at least seven songs with lyrics, says Benny Andersson. I was imagine the new album as a schlager record.

You mean schlager like the Melodifestivalen?

- No, I don't call this schlager. Popular music from 1940 to...what shall I say? 1940 to 1977. There will be more singing on this record.

Is it newly written since the last BAO album?

- There are some tunes that are older than me, says Benny Andersson, 60, and laughs. But most of it is new.

There wont be any summer tour with dancing floors this time. But those who want to take a schottis to the Benny Anderssons Irkester will get a chance in October.

They're planning concerts in Globen and Scandinavium.

- It would be fun to make an Folkpark out of Globen, says Benny Andersson. With a shooting range and ?. And a dance floor of course.

But it's a long time to October and the record isn't ready yet.

MAMMA MIA! IN ISRAEL

When British producer Judy Craymer first came up with the idea for MAMMA
MIA, a musical set to the famous tunes of Swedish pop group ABBA, she
could not have dreamed that more than 20 years later 30 million people
worldwide would have viewed and loved her innovative creation. Or that
seven years after its premiere at London's Prince Edward Theater, the show
would still be drawing in upwards of $8 million per year in performances
from London to New York, Budapest to Doha, Dubai to Dublin, Hamburg,
Helsinki, Beijing and Moscow.

With a plot written by playwright Catherine Johnson and creative input
from former ABBA members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson, the successful
show's International Tour is set to make its debut in Tel Aviv, Israel in
less than three months.

"We are bringing the real deal to Israel," Marek Lieberberg, the
international producer of what is likely to be the biggest entertainment
production of the year and perhaps the largest international music event
Israel has ever seen, told The Jerusalem Post during a recent trip to
Dublin to see the same show and meet the cast that will arrive here on
June 11.

"Israel is a great market and its about time they got the great shows,"
said Lieberberg, who himself is Jewish and has relatives in Israel. "It's
a massive logistical task, the whole set will be in Helsinki right before
it comes to Israel but we plan to transplant all the equipment from there
to Israel exactly the same as it is."

Lieberberg's company will not undertake this task alone. Mobile phone
company Orange is sponsoring part of the production and local producers
Shmuel Zemach and Uri Ofer will also facilitate the huge operation, which
includes transforming the Nokia basketball arena in Tel Aviv, the only
location here large enough to house the show, into a theater and providing
local audiences with simultaneous translations to Hebrew.

Not that the storyline is too complicated, even those with the most
limited of English should have not problem understanding it.

It is set on an anonymous Greek island, where young Sophie is about to
marry her beau Sky. But before she gets hitched, she is determined to find
out the identity of her father, which her mother has kept secret from her.
Her mother is former wild child Donna, who Sophie finds out had three
lovers around the time she was conceived. Sophie decides to invite all
three - Harry, Bill and Sam - to her wedding in the hope that when she
meets them it will be immediately clear which one is her father. What
follows is a typical farce, with people falling in love, leading to much
confusion but ultimately a happy ending.

While the light plot borders on a spoof, what keeps the show going are the
eternally catchy ABBA songs. They won over millions of fans worldwide back
in the 1970s and, in Ireland earlier this month, they brought the audience
to its feet. All the favorites are packed into the show - "Chiquitita",
"Dancing Queen", "Does Your Mother Know", "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!", "S.O.S",
"The Winner Takes It All", "Waterloo" and, of course, "Mamma Mia".

"I never get tired of singing ABBA songs," said Jeffrey Harmer, who plays
Bill in the show and who is among the cast members set to perform in
Israel this summer. "We always get such a fantastic reaction from the
audience."

"We have performed in so many different places to numerous audiences and
the reaction does vary," admitted Steven Paling, who as well as performing
in the show's chorus, is also its artistic coordinator. "But the show is
what it is and no matter what language one speaks, people usually
understand it."

Paling said that the cast usually tailors its ad-hoc humor and dance moves
to the local theater-goers (in Ireland there was a hint of Riverdance
thrown in to fire up the audience) and that the Israeli audience would be
no exception. "We might need some help coming up with some more ideas
though."

As for the question of whether Israel's volatile security situation could
stop the cast or crew from making its historic debut here, Morag Stiller,
who plays Donna's best friend Rosie, said that she is really excited about
the opportunity to perform in Israel.

"I have some good friends who have just moved to Israel and they say it is
beautiful," she said.

"We are all looking forward to coming, it will be a real adventure for us.
That is best part of our work that we get to see different places and
cultures," agreed Paling.

Producer Lieberberg said he had no indication that anything would prevent
this international show from coming here, as happened with his last big
production in Israel in 2006, when the technical staff for music group
Depeche Mode backed out at the last minute.

"This time I have taken every precaution to ensure that it does not
happen," he promised.

The Israeli performances of MAMMA MIA begin on Tuesday, June 12 through
23, with shows running Mon-Sat. (not including Fri.) at 8:30 pm, Fri. at
1:30 pm, Wed. and Sat. at 4:30 pm.

So far, more than 50,000 tickets have been sold for the 24 shows, with
3,000 people expected at each performance.

Tickets cost NIS 250-475 and NIS 169-349 for Orange customers and can be
bought via ticket agency Kastel 03 604 5000, 02 622 2333, 02-623 7000,

KRISTINA COURT BATTLE WON

ABBA stars win court battle over musical

Online: http://www.thelocal.se/6779/

Abba stars Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus have won a court case surrounding the authorship of their musical 'Kristina från Duvemåla'. Friday's verdict is the latest development in a 15-year dispute with dramatist Carl-Johan Seth.

Stockholm District Court ruled that while Seth had written a script called 'Kristina från Duvemåla', it was not this script that was eventually used for the musical, known in English simply as 'Kristina'. Andersson and Ulvaeus have claimed that Seth's original script was so bad that they called in other writers to start again from scratch.

The court agreed with Andersson and Ulvaeus that the final script was written by director Lars Rudolfsson and dramatist Jan Mark.

As such, Seth has no claims to the copyright and the ABBA pair are not obliged to pay him any royalties.

It was previously revealed in court documents that Seth received a payment of 5 million kronor, which Andersson and Ulvaeus say they paid simply to guarantee peace and quiet.

Seth worked with Andersson and Ulvaeus for several years at the beginning of the 1990s. His job was to create an outline story for the musical. A number of Seth's previous colleagues testified under oath that his script was unusable and that Rudolfsson and Mark penned the version that was used in the musical.

But Seth argued that their involvement was just a standard revision of his script, pointing out that the former Abba members signed an agreement with him confirming that he was the author shortly before the premiere.

Seth was named as scriptwriter in the programme for the world premiere in Malmö in 1995, but has since then not been acknowledged in any publicity for the musical.

After a quick look at the verdict, Carl-Johan Seth's lawyer, Staffan Michelson, immediately indicated that his client would appeal.

"The district court has made an extraordinarily peculiar interpretation that the parties agreed on something other than the musical that premiered eight days later," he said.

Had the verdict gone against them, Andersson and Ulvaeus explained that the musical would never again be performed on stage.

The case came to a head as the ABBA pair developed plans to launch a Broadway version of the musical. Earnings from a US version could be affected by the outcome of the current case.

'Kristina' tells the story of a poverty-stricken Swedish family and their migration to American in the nineteenth century. The musical received a rapturous reception in Sweden, and was seen by over a million people, compared with 847,000 who saw the the Swedish version of the Abba stars' international success 'Mamma Mia'.

KRISTINA CASE VERDICT

The winners took it all as ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson won the dispute in a Stockholm district court on who wrote their blockbuster musical, ”Kristina från Duvemåla.”

The court ruled that even if playwright Carl-Johan Seth wrote a script with the same title, it was not his work which was used to create the musical.

The court ruled that the script was written by director Lars Rudolfsson and playwright Jan Mark. Seth has no claim to royalties from the musical.

Carl-Johan Seth’s lawyer made immediate plans to appeal, saying a 1995 contract between the parties bound Ulvaeus and Andersson to Seth’s manuscript.

MELODIFESTIVALEN VOTES

This week Aftonbladet.se published the number of televotes the top 5 songs in each semi-final, Andra Chansen and the Final received.

Worth noticing is that the total number of votes Nanne got in her semi final should've gotten her to the final, but she lost to Sebastian in round two. After the first round of voting she was in second place after Måns Zelmerlöw (beautiful boy, great voice, but boring song) and outnumbered Sebastian (who had the third position) with over 10,000 votes. But in round two Sebastian increased his votes with 20,000, when Nanne only got about 5,000 more votes than round 1 and Sebastian so outnumbered her with 5,000 votes.

So, Nanne received a total of 126,000 votes and Sebastian received 120,000 votes, but he won since he got more votes than Nanne in the second round.

I actually liked Sebastian (one of my favourites) but it still is a bit sad we didn't have Nanne in the Final. She does know how to put on a great show! We should've replaced Måns with Nanne and the Final would've been great!

All votes can be viewed here:

ABBA SING TRADITIONAL SONG

BENNY ON DUTCH TV

Yesterday evening there was a show on Dutch tv in honour of the 65th birthday of Joop van den Endy tv and musical producer.

He is also responsible for some of the European Mamma Mia! productions.

A lot of artists performed and sent in prerecorded birthday wishes. People like Liza Minelli and Phil Collins.

Benny appeared via a pre-recorded piece wishing Joop a happy birthday and saying he hoped they would work together in the future on other projects.

After that Simone Kleinsma, the Dutch Donna came up to sing a song from Mamma Mia!, with special lyrics for Joop of course. It was quite funny, saying she was the one and only Donna, then 6 or 7 other Donnas turned up, from different European Mamma Mia! productions. They ended with singing Waterloo together.

You can watch the show if you want on www.uitzendinggemist.nl, click at the show Deze is voor jou, Benny is at 22 minutes, Simone Kleinsma and the other Donnas are right after Benny.

MELODIFESTIVALEN RESULT ANNOUNCED

The results are just in. The Ark will be representing Sweden at Eurovision with their glam rock number "The Worrying Kind". It's a grower and I'm sure it will do well in Helsinki although it would not have been my choice.

The final results:
The Ark - The Worrying Kind (248 points)
Andreas Johnson - A Little Bit of Love (189 points)
Måns Zelmerlöw - Cara Mia (171 points)
Sarah Dawn Finer - I Remember Love (122 points)
Maria Lindberg - Trying to Recall (70 points)
Sonja Aldén - För Att Du fFnns (62 points)
Sanna Nielsen - Vågare du, vågar jag (44 points)
Sebastian - When The Night Comes Falling (39 points)
Anna Book - Samba Sambero (1 point)
Tommy Nilsson - Jag Tror På Människan (0 points)

A convincing win.

I was quite taken by the ballads this year, especially Sarah Dawn Finer and Marie Lindberg. Surprised that Tommy got nil points. It wasn't that bad. I think a ballad might have done well at this year's Eurovision but the masses have spoken.

Still disappointed that Nanne wasn't there. And the Attic, Regina and Elin. Some singles to buy when I get the chance. And of course, the brand new album from Nanne.

FRIDA INTERVIEW IN NEW FRENCH ABBA BOOK

More information about the new French ABBA book...

The tone is the enthusiastic tone of a fan.

However, one interesting feature is an interview with Frida about her album Shine that was conducted by Guy Bodescot, then running the French ABBA fan club.

Although she says she thinks Shine is a good album, she doesn't conceal her disappointment about the sales and complain that there was not hit single recorded on that album. She says that she cannot afford to keep doing albums she cannnot sell.

Another topic is that this album is not aimed at ABBA fans but aimed at everybody but if ABBA fans love it, she is honoured.

AGNETHA MENTIONED IN ELO BOOKLET

Perusing the booklet that came with the recently remastered CD 'Balance Of
Power' from ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA it states in the notes ".....Production duties followed for Richard Tandy and Dave Morgan's charity single 'Action' while Abba star
Agnetha Faltskog chose a new Lynne composition 'One Way Love' as the lead track and first single from her debut solo album 'Eyes Of A Woman'."

So while we all know it was far from her debut solo anything and it wasn't even the first single off the album (here anyway), I suppose it was nice to see it mentioned!

MORE NAMES FOR MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE

From:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

With Oscar-winning star Meryl Streep landing the main role in the movie version of Mamma Mia! some of the other parts are going to people closer to home.

The story, as most of the world now knows, involves Donna (Meryl), the one-time rebellious mother of Sophie, who's about to get married at her mother's Greek island hotel.

Julie Walters has been considered to play Rosie, one of Donna's funloving girlfriends and former member of Donna And The Dynamos, but talks are at an early stage.

Dominic Cooper, the heart-throb actor (he was in the original stage and screen versions of The History Boys and will star in the BBC's forthcoming Sense And Sensibilty), is in the final stages of negotiations to play Sky, Sophie's intended.

I do, I do, I do: Dominic Cooper hopes to join Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!

Mr Cooper has auditioned for the movie's ruling trio - director Phyllida Lloyd, producer Judy Craymer and writer Catherine Johnson - and they love him. But, just as importantly, so does Tom Hanks, another of the film's producers.

Hanks worked with Dominic on the TV drama Band Of Brothers and the recent film Starter For Ten.

Bill Nighy could also find himself in the film if dates work out.

Pierce Brosnan and virtual unknown American actress Amanda Seyfried have already been cast. Ms Seyfried will play Sophie.

Filming will begin at Pinewood Studios in late June and then move to Greece in September.

But first the cast will work with ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, laying down the tracks of all the numbers, from Honey, Honey to Waterloo.

THANKS FOR THE EMAILS

Thanks to regular ABBAMAIL.com visitors for their emails with news stories and updates over the last couple of weeks.

It isn't that we didn't have any news to publish, it was just that we didn't have the time: our whole world was rocked with the arrival in Australia of Swedish ABBAMAIL list member, Gustav Sandberg.

Gustav is one of the original ABBAMAILers - he's been on the list for 10 years and joined when he was only 16. Like many other ABBAMAIL list members, Gustav has made friends with people around the world through ABBAMAIL and has met up with them in places like Stockholm, London, Amsterdam and finally, Sydney, Australia.

Gustav has been one of Graeme & Grant's best friends throughout the last ten years and having him in Australia for two weeks was the most incredible experience. We literally dropped everything to make sure Gustav's visit was Priority #1.

We've already put a gallery up of Gustav's initial days in Australia. Since that time we've taken hundreds of photos and Gustav has met up with lots of Aussie ABBAMAILers at various get-togethers.

He also got to witness the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras first hand and the following day there was an ABBAMAIL gathering of about 20 at the Glenmore pub in Sydney's "Rocks" area.

Taronga Zoo and a photo op with a koala, a visit to the Sydney Aquarium, lots of shopping and much, much more were on the agenda during Gustav's two week stay in Australia. We've had a number of ABBAMAILers visit Sydney from interstate and from other countries over the last decade but this was the most special visit for Grant and myself.

So ABBAMAIL had to take a backseat for a while. I hope you all understand!

If you do want to submit a news story to ABBAMAIL for the website, send it to: info@abbamail.com - make sure you give us the source of the information, any links where appropriate and, of course, your name so we can credit you on ABBAMAIL.com

ABBA FAN IN IDOL!

ABBA fan Dimitri Jambé is one of the last 20 contestants in the Belgian (Flemish) version of American Idol called “Idool 2007”.

Next Saturday March 17 the first Live-show with the male contestants is being broadcast and now everything depends on how many votes he gets from the viewers. As he's such a big ABBA fan himself (and he's doing everything to make the Flemish press aware of this), he's hoping to get some votes from other Belgian ABBA fans.

There is a weblink www.vtm.be/idool2007 where you can view clips, pictures etc., all in Dutch of course. After the first Live-show a clip of the song Dimitre performed should be available to see for the world outside of Belgium too.

BENNY INSTALLS NEW EQUIPMENT IN MONO MUSIC STUDIO

Composer/Producer Benny Andersson Installs SSL Duality Console
http://mixonline.com/

A Solid State Logic Duality console has been installed in composer/producer Benny Andersson's Mono Music Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. The 96-channel Duality allows the studio to maintain the classic SuperAnalogue sound of SSL consoles and take advantage of full integration with the latest digital audio workstations.

“I wanted to see a new generation of analog mixers designed to work with a DAW rather than tape recorders,” says studio manager, Bernard Lohr. “After testing several large-format desks, we were contacted by SSL, and they showed us the specs of the new Duality. I really liked the concept and felt straightaway that this was the next-generation analog desk. It feels like you are working more within the world of the DAW you are using. I am working in Pro Tools right now and it is so much more integrated—very close and tight.”

Lohr works with major pop artists at Mono Music, having recorded and mixed singles for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Westlife and Céline Dion, among others. “Recently, I’ve also been doing some special ABBA projects,” he adds, “like the ABBA In Concert DVD and the new release of ABBA: The Movie, which we’ve remastered in 5.1. One of the reasons we needed a newer desk was 5.1-channel audio, and the surround facilities on Duality are terrific. The new surround panning is great—no other desk has anything like it.

“I’ve been working on SSLs since 1985,” Lohr concludes, “so I know them really well. Duality compares so well, with its sound and also the EQ and dynamics. Even if I hadn’t tried it before buying, I knew that it would be top quality.”

EMBRACING ABBA....AND OTHER GUILTY PLEASURES

http://blogcritics.org/archives/2007/02/18/172417.php

The Rockologist: Embracing ABBA And Other Guilty Pleasures
Written by Glen Boyd
Part of The Rockologist

Being the textbook sort of musical snob I like to think of myself as, I have a hard time admitting to some of the more decidedly "un-hip" sides of my music palette. At least in public anyway.

Some would call my continuing fondness for overblown, pretentious seventies progressive rock bands like Yes, Marillion, and Peter Gabriel era Genesis a flaw in my taste for example. Hell, for that matter they would probably nail me for the fact that in this past year alone I've written about a disproportionate number of seventies classic rock bands period.

And what about that Springsteen guy, some may find themselves asking. You know, the guy whose continuing "relevance" was a subject of some debate recently right here at Blogcritics Magazine? After all, isn't Springsteen — the guy whose songs champion the values of the working class — a bloated millionaire liberal himself?

Well, why some might find themselves a little ashamed to admit to enjoying artists such as these, I myself choose to wave that fact as a flag of some honor. But for me, there is no guiltier pleasure in all of music than that of the perfectly constructed three minute or so pop song. I here and now confess that I am an absolute sucker for this type of sugary sweet ear candy.

You know the sort of songs I'm talking about. Many of them by one hit wonders such as The Raspberries ("Go All The Way"), and The Outsiders ("Time Won't Let Me") on the rock side, or a guy like Lou Christie ("Lightnin' Strikes," "Rhapsody On The Rain") on the more pop sounding side. Okay, so Lou Christie had more than one hit (actually so did the Raspberries).

Anyway, for me these sort of perfect little pop tunes can represent every bit the sort of audio bliss that something as meticulously constructed and put to tape as say, Born To Run or Pet Sounds does. And over the past thirty years or so, nobody but nobody has made a greater string of these largely unheralded little pop masterpieces than Abba. That's right, I said Abba.

So for this edition of The Rockologist, I am going to remove that particular hat, and replace it with that of the Popologist. Let's talk about Abba for a few minutes shall we?

First of all, what a lot of people don't realize about Abba is that they have more than a few fans amongst the more "respectable" members of the rock community. I remember meeting Nick Lowe for example backstage in the seventies at a concert, where I noticed he was wearing an Abba button. Lowe at the time was one of the most sought after producers in music, in addition to crafting his own little pop gems such as those found on his album Pure Pop For Now People. So when I remarked about his Abba button, Lowe gushed about how he was then producing an album for Elvis Costello and that the sound he was looking for would be to make an "Elvis Costello Abba album." That album tuned out to be Costello's brilliant third album, the pop masterpiece Armed Forces.

What Abba did so flawlessly for most of the seventies was crank out hit after hit after hit in the form of these beautifully crafted great pop singles. Many of them you know of course — there's "Dancing Queen," "Take A Chance On Me," "Mamma Mia" and all the rest. A lot of these great songs owe more than a little to Phil Spector, such as "SOS" with it's swirling production resembling nothing so much as it's own "wall of sound."

Other songs you may not know as well, as not at all of them were near the big hits in America that they were in Europe. Take "Honey, Honey" for example. Notice how, in the video for the song, Agnetha and Annifrid (or "Frida" as those of us who love her know her), sing the lyrics in such an innocent sort of way, even as they coyly sway their hips in what is damn near a "come hither" sort of suggestion.

The song itself cleverly disguises itself as a sweet sort of little "I love you," while still managing to mask it's more erotic intent. On the one hand there's a line like "I'm gonna stick to you boy, you'll never get rid of me," while on the other there's "Honey to say the least, you're a doggone beast." So you tell me what they are really singing about here.

Simply put, Abba's best songs were about sex. But they were so cleverly packaged as sweet, innocent little pop songs — with Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha, and Frida themselves the very embodiment of such wholesome innocence — that the majority of the world never got it, even as they gobbled up this ear candy to the tune of something like a billion records sold. Again, take another song like "Knowing Me Knowing You." Now you tell me what this song is really about.

Well okay. Maybe "Knowing Me Knowing You" isn't about sex. But have you ever heard a song about breaking up sung in such an erotic way? The way Agnetha sings the backup vocal as a breathy sort of whisper makes you want to skip past the breakup altogether and get straight to the make-up part.

If it sounds like I'm fixating on the sexuality of Abba's two female singers here, I actually have a confession to make. In my twenties, and supposedly all grown up and past such things, I actually had something of a teenybopper's crush on Frida. You think I'm kidding? Try this on for size.

When Abba finally toured America in what I want to say was about 1979, I scored third row tickets and took the girl I was seeing at the time to the show. Well, when Frida would make her way over to our side of the stage, she kept making eye contact with me. This actually caused me to squirm in a way not at all unlike that of a teenage girl at a Clay Aiken (or back then, Shaun Cassidy) concert. As I went on and on about how "Frida was looking at me," my date's anger rose just as steadily. I never saw her again after that night.

So these days Abba finally appear to be getting some respect. Touring Abba tribute bands like Bjorn Again do pretty big business on the concert curcuit, and the musical Mamma Mia, based on Abba's songs, has been a box office smash all over the world.

But more importantly, the bands songs and the way they were produced are also finally getting their rightful due. People finally seem to have come around to the fact that Bjorn and Benny share as much with people like Brian Wilson, John Phillips, and Phil Spector as they do with Barry Gibb and the other disco song-smiths they were lumped into a category with back in the seventies.

So go ahead and dust off that copy of Abba Gold you've been keeping in the closet and give it a spin. Go ahead and admit it. You love it.

It's okay. Honest.

WILL KRISTINA MAKE IT TO BROADWAY???

http://baltimore.broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=16308

A court case involving script rights for the Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus musical Kristina från Duvemåla will determine the musical's Broadway future.

The dispute is between Andersson and Ulvaeus and Carl-Johan Seth, who wrote the musical's original libretto. The ABBA legends claim that a new script was written by director Lars Rudolfsson and dramatist Jan Mark before the premiere in Malmö, Sweden under a year from being asked to.

A decision will be made by a judge on March 23rd. If Anderssen and Ulvaeus lose, the show will only be allowed to be performed in concert productions. If they win, they hope to try the show out in Minneapolis this fall with a Spring 2008 Broadway opening.

Kristina Från Duvemåla, an epic musical about Swedish immigrants and their new life in North America, based on a series of novels by Vilhelm Moberg, premiered in Malmö, Sweden on October 7th, 1995. "In all, it is reported than in a country of just over 9 million inhabitants, more than 1 million saw Kristina during its performances in Malmö, Göteborg and Stockholm," according to the Anderssen and Ulvaeus fan website. In 1996, the show was presented in concert form in Minnesota.

Known worldwide for their hits with the pop group ABBA, Anderssen and Ulvaeus also co-wrote the musical Chess. Their songs for ABBA can be heard in the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia!.

AGNETHA: THINGS GO BETTER WITH "COKE"???

From the "What the f**k"?????? department.....

This article was in a Dutch gay magazine "Squeeze" and they have given it a full page article. I have tried translating and I hope you will enjoy this article just like I did. The only question that keeps playing through my mind.... did I miss something??? Agnetha and Coke???

Agnetha's Cocaine addiction:

Frida the legend, is still a very attractive woman, even after becoming a widow when her husband Prince "Reuss" died, she has been connected to different men by the press and media.

This isn't strange because she is still gorgeous and looks radiant, and she is a well travelled and experienced woman.

Her intimate friends say she is good to be with and a generous and friendly host. All together she could be the winning prize for many men.

The latest young men in her life seems to be Robbie Williams, they have been seen together in different society parties, and he has travelled to Zermatt staying with Frida for a few days. They seem to ignore wondering looks and people who are shocked, they even seem to like those looks. There must be a romance going on.

Well that's what the gossip and tabloids write, but the truth is very different...

After becoming a widow, Frida has no interest in other men and Robbie understands why Frida isn't over her loss, he even understands he is not what Frida looks for in a man.

Robbie contacted Frida wanting to record some ABBA songs to save his career, knowing those ABBA jewels will make sure he is topping the charts again.

He wanted Frida's help because he knew how very difficult those ABBA songs are to make and who better than Frida would know how to re-record those tracks again.

Frida liked the boy and their friendship began to grow. Frida begean to see Robbie as a son of hers. She knows the troubles Robbie is dealing with, she knows the tensions and stress of beng a star. Robbie has been addicted to alcohol and drugs and Frida remembers those days when her co- ABBA star Agnetha suffered from cocaine addictions.

Agnetha couldn't cope with being a worldwide star and it all turned into cocaine in the 80s. But it wasn't just the cocaine it was an addiction to attention as well.

Frida has been Agnetha's biggest support back then and that's why Agnetha quit coke, and she is grateful ever since.

Frida never did coke or other drugs.

She managed to divide private life and work and just a glass of wine at dinner was more than enough to loose her tensions.

Frida recognises all Robbie's troubles in those of Agnetha decades ago.

They share the same sense of humour and have lots of fun, and in her loneliness she becomes alive when Robbie and Frida are together.

They are a match together, and they have a platonic relationship

Robbie would love to bring their chemistry on record but Frida seems to think different. She would love to help Robbie study up on ABBA's material but singing those songs herself remains a question.

But who knows? Frida has surprised us more often in the past.

It is not known if Robbie asked Agnetha for help.

CRITICAL MAMMA MIA! REVIEW

ABBA fans take a chance, but thin story disappoints
By JEFFREY DAY
http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/living/%2016805247.htm

Take the music of pop group ABBA, toss in a reunion of three older gal pals, add a wedding with a bride trying to find her long-lost dad, set it on a Greek island - and you have "Momma Mia!", a musical marketing dream guaranteed to fill houses.

That's what it has done since 1999 from London to Moscow to Columbia, where it started an eight-performance run Tuesday at the Koger Center.

But a box-office favorite isn't necessarily a good show.

Unlike most musicals, none of the tunes were written for the show: All are from the ABBA songbook. And unlike musical reviews, "Mamma Mia!" has a real storyline about free-spirited mom Donna and daughter Sofie, who invites the three guys who might be her dad to her wedding.

Some ABBA tunes slip right in the narrative and move the story forward; just as many feel shoehorned in.

The most intriguing part of the show is the gal reunion. Donna is an earth-mother businesswoman, Rosie is wise-cracking and overweight, and Tanya is a gold-digger who's two-third legs and one-third blonde hair. The women playing them, Laurie Wells, Laura Ware and Lisa Mandel, can sing, act, do slapstick comedy and pratfalls while singing.

But the story is awfully thin and has no suspense or payoff.

The three possible fathers show up 15 minutes in: Harry is a nerdy British banker, Bill is a blowhard Aussie outdoor writer, and Sam looks like a cross between Hugh Jackman and soap opera star Jack Wagner.

Guess who Donna's still in love with?

Sam's redemption at the end is too little, too late. The entire exploration of who is Sofie's daddy is cursory at best.

Milo Shandel as Bill is larger than life; Ian Simpson makes Harry comically lovable; and in the role of lost love Sam, Sean Allan Krill is white bread and has been saddled with a confusing and unsympathetic background.

The high points of the show are the comic bits: the women singing "Dancing Queen" into blow dryers and Rosie and Harry doing a little chair-to-chair pursuit to "Take a Chance on Me."

The supporting actors are serviceable at best. The large ensemble (it's a cast of 29) make a fine choir, but the dance sequences are surprisingly amateurish. The set consists of two curved walls, which are moved to provide the exterior and courtyard of the island inn. It's underwhelming.

Overwhelming is the way the songs are handled. The show does have some strong characters, but rarely are they allowed to speak, or sing, in a distinctive voice. When one of them starts singing, he or she is joined by an loudly-amplified off-stage chorus that hijacks the character.

ABBA's music was a wall-of-synthesizer sound joined by two robotic women singing; it was highly polished and emotionally distant. That was its beauty.

That's not the sound you want when trying to create flesh-and-blood characters standing on stage before you.

Just in case there aren't enough ABBA hits, the last 10 minutes of the show consists of a reprise of "Dancing Queen" and a rendition of "Waterloo," both complete with bright costumes and wild lighting. At this point, the show crosses the line between pleasing its target audience and pandering to it.

CHESS PRODUCTIONS REVIEWED

I saw two different versions of Chess within 28 days and I thought I would share some info with you:

In October last year ABBAMAILer Carmen Simon told us about Chess being played in Kaiserslautern, and after a while I finally decided to see the show on 27th January. It is shown every now and then in the Pfalztheater and there are some more performances in the coming weeks. Direct link: http://www.pfalztheater.de/01.Spielplan/01.Spielplanx/ show_detail.php?theater_id=355

It seems to be the same version that fellow ABBAMAILer Samia and I saw five years ago in Kassel. The show is completely in German (except for One Night In Bangkok, even though the show in Kassel had a German version of this song) and is set in the mid 1960s, shortly after the Cuba crisis when the cold war was at its peak - as was the bad taste for hair and clothes. The first acts plays in New York, the second act in Bangkok.

And last May ABBAMAIlers Jerom Schol and Sandra Klaver told us about Chess touring through the Netherlands, and Sandra also sent a review in January. The derniere was going to be played in Amsterdam on a Friday, and as I like Amsterdam very much, I booked tickets and went to Amsterdam last Friday to see the show (and the city) - with the same non-ABBA- fan friend who accompanied me to see it in Kaiserslautern.

It was completely different to the German version we saw in Kaiserslautern, and both had strengths and weaknesses.

The Dutch Freddie was absolutely emotionally over the top in his solo songs, he screamed and shouted, but I liked that. In the German version he gave himself a heroin injection. The Dutch Freddie had severe problems hitting the right notes in his first song (during his solo in Merano I think), but later he was as good as the rest of the cast.

The Dutch Anatoly was twice Florence's age I would estimate, but had a great full voice. Gee, like in the Chess på Svenska version! (it's the guy on the very left http://www.musicalchess.nl/)

The German Arbiter was old and not as egocentric and crazy as in the other versions. Even my friend noticed that this guy was not made for this role, even though he was a good singer.

The German version had a lot of ballet scenes, which to me was a little too much, especially when they started to dance around the three meters tall Chess pieces or dressed *as* chess pieces. In Amsterdam there was hardly any choreography. The cast was only half the size of the Kaiserslautern version, and as it was a touring cast they concentrated on singers.

I didn't really like the sometimes minimalistic stage settings of the German version (as they don't play the show every day it has to be quite minimalistic), but now prefer it over the Dutch stage settings that were minimalistic as well (as this show was touring through the country, it had to be) but in a different way.

In both versions they used video screens which I did not like. In the German version they used pre- recorded scenes, or cool effects that did not fit into the 1960s though. In the Dutch version they actually sometimes showed what was going on on the stage and showed close-ups (I guess to emphasize that the press was around during the chess tournament all the time) or photos, for example of the Soviet's invasion into Budapest or of the former chess champions (up to 2002, when the cold war was long over and the Soviet Union did not exist anymore...).

What really annoyed me in the Dutch version was the fact that most of the scenes were taking place in the far back of the stage or on the right. As I was sitting on the right side, I couldn't see everything. And the dialogues were longer in the Dutch version I think.

But I liked both shows, and for a short time I liked the fact that there are several different versions, even though this incompleteness of the original probably was the reason that it was never such a big success. But the music is gorgeous!

They spoke to several of thes children, now adults... Obviosuly it raised interest due to Frida.

And there it was, a discussion how many fled Norway to escape thier own people... making reference to Frida ... they showed her along with ABBA from the early 1970's.

AND MORE ON MAMMA MIA! "BONDAGE"

http://www.movieweb.com:80/news/04/18204.php

Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried are in final negotiations to star alongside Meryl Streep in the musical adaptation, Mamma Mia! for Universal Pictures and Playtone.

The popular ABBA musical will be directed by Phyllida Lloyd; the story revolves around a bride-to-be and her formerly rebellious mom (Streep) who raised her on a Greek island and never disclosed the identity of her father, says The Hollywood Reporter. The bride locates three men who might be her father and invites them to her wedding; the musical features 22 ABBA songs, including "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Winner Takes It All." Brosnan will play the main father figure, while Seyfried has snagged the role of the bride-to-be.

Mamma Mia!'s screenplay was written by Catherine Johnson, who wrote the show's book. Holly Bario is overseeing for Universal.

JAMES BOND FOR MAMMA MIA!

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=19216

Mamma Mia! Pierce Brosnan to Sing!
Variety March 7, 2007

Pierce Brosnan will star opposite Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!, the film adaptation of the hit musical for Universal Pictures and producing partners Playtone and Littlestar. Variety says the movie begins shooting June 25 in London and Greece.

Brosnan sang a few Irish standards in the indie drama Evelyn, and sang onstage early in his career. But this will be a decided departure for an actor best known for playing the steely James Bond.

Brosnan will play Sam, one of three men summoned to a Greek isle by a young woman who believes one of them is her father.

For Brosnan, the opportunity to belt out such ABBA standards as "S.O.S.," which will be a duet with Streep, was irresistible.

"I said yes right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep," Brosnan told the trade. "Secondly, I saw the show with my family in London, and found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful, and so pitched in time forever in the 1970s. What a kick in the pants, to be able to go off and spend time with Meryl on some Greek island, singing ABBA songs."

Mamma Mia! is being produced by Littlestar's Judy Craymer and Playtone's Gary Goetzman and Tom Hanks. Rita Wilson will executive produce with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, latter of whom wrote the tunes when they were the creative catalysts for ABBA.

Phyllida Lloyd, who directed "Mamma Mia!" in its London and Broadway runs, is helming the picture, which was scripted by Catherine Johnson. She wrote the book for the stage musical, which recently surpassed $2 billion in ticket sales in more than 140 cities since opening in 1999.

Brosnan takes the job while preparing a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair, which John Rogers scripted and Brosnan is producing under his Irish DreamTime banner. A director will be set shortly and production will begin before year's end.

He's a Queen. Dancing. Queen.

Pierce Brosnan will play the male lead opposite Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!, the film adaptation of the hit musical for Universal and producing partners Playtone and Littlestar.

There's something about a guy who once played James Bond(no matter how bad Die Another Day was, Brosnan was a Bond.let's try to remember him for Goldeneye instead) belting out ABBA songs that makes a tiny part of me die every time I think about it.

Good news for Timothy Dalton, though, as this might be such a bad idea for a former Bond that people forget about The Beautician and the Beast.

NEW STIG DOUBLE-CD

Double-CD of Stig Anderson songs to be released
The lyrical legacy of ABBA's legendary manager celebrated on an upcoming compilation.

On May 7, 2007, a double-CD of songs featuring lyrics written by ABBA manager Stig Anderson is released. The double-CD is aptly titled "Text: Stikkan Anderson" ("Lyrics: Stikkan Anderson"; Stikkan was Stig's Swedish nickname, under which he was known in his home-country).

For the first time, a career-spanning overview of the hit machine that was Stig is made available. During more than 25 years as one of Sweden's most prolific lyricists, he wrote the Swedish lyrics for hit versions of international chart busters such as 'Green Green Grass Of Home', 'Monday, Monday', 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' (the Swedish version was recorded by Frida), 'It's My Party', 'Little Green Apples', 'Rose Garden' and countless others.

Naturally, the CD also features a number of ABBA tracks, along with selections by Frida, Agnetha, Björn, the duo Björn & Benny, and Björn's folk music group Hootenanny Singers. Other tracks of particular interest for the ABBA fan include Lena Andersson's 'Säj det med en sång', Brita Borg's 'Ljuva sextital' (the music for both songs was written by Benny and Björn), 'Bang en boomerang' by Svenne & Lotta (the Swedish version of ABBA's 'Bang-A-Boomerang') and Lena Andersson's Swedish version of ABBA's 'Hasta Mañana'.

A handful of tracks on the double-CD feature both lyrics and music by Stig, including 'Tivedshambo', the very first song he ever wrote (performed by Stig himself!).

FRENCH ABBA BOOK RELEASED

As announced, the French book "ABBA la Biographie" by Frederique Courcier has finally been released. There was just one copy in the shop today as here, they don't seem interested in promoting ABBA (sigh !)

http://www.france-europe-editions.com/livre.php3?isbn=2-84825-168-9

The book is about 500 pages. Don't expect a lot of photos. Only a few familiar black and white pictures at the end of the book. The front cover features the photograph from the Does Your Mother Know single and at the back of the book is a photograph of 1974 with Abba in their Eurovision suits.

The book first features chapters about each ABBA member, pre-ABBA . Then the story of Abba year by year with one chapter for each year from 1970 until 2004. Then the book features other chapters : The Last News, other chapters about each ABBA member, then the Abba team, the ABBA image, the ABBA sound and the ABBA heritage.

The book is the first complete book about the ABBA story in French but if you don't speak French at all, the only reason for you to buy this book is to add it to your collection. But it is great news for French speaking fans around the world...... I suppose it contains information available for those who can read English but it is certainly complete for those who love ABBA and don't master the English language at all.

NANNE'S NEW ALBUM TRACKLIST

The official site www.nanne.se has released the track listing for Nanne's new album, released this month in Sweden.

1. Jag Måste Kyssa Dig (I Must Kiss You)
2. Pissenisse (Nisse is a mythical Scandinavian character and Pisse is to do with pissing so I'm not sure about this one)
3. Bro Över Mörka Vatten (Swedish cover version of Bridge Over Troubled Water)
4. Desperat (Desperate)
5. Kom Hit (Come Here)
6. Hur Kan Jag Va Så Dum? (How Can I Be So Dumb?)
7. Ännu En Dag (Still One Day)
8. Se Men Inte Röra (Look But Don't Touch)
9. Viskaren (The Whisperer)
10. Skor (Shoes)
11. Hornen I Pannan (The Horns On My Forehead)
12. Livet Det Måste Levas Live (Life Must Be Lived Live)

"Viskaren" is a track from Nanne's first album from 1998 so I'm hoping this is a reimagined version. A fun track with lots of screaming. :-)

"Hornen I Pannan" was written by Nanne for Cecilia Vennersten's first album back in 1995. A fabulous song and it should be interesting to hear Nanne's take on it.

On the single front, Nanne's Melodifestivalen entry has been released as a CD single and includes a remix. The remix of "Jag Måste Kyssa Dig" is the Soundfactory Club Remix so that should be fab.

BETTE MIDLER FOR MAMMA MIA!?

The other night I met this guy and I mentioned that I had been to see
Wicked a couple days earlier. He said, 'oh, I work for the company
that designed the poster!' We talked about that for a while and I
asked him if they had designed the poster for Mamma Mia!, and he said
not the Broadway show but they are now working on the movie version,
"with Meryl Streep and Bette Midler."

Who knows - is Bette the next mystery cast announcement?

PETER JÖBACK NEW RELEASE

I have just found out that Peter Jöback is releasing a new single later this month. It is a duet with group Laakso and is called "Helsinki vs Italy" and will also be included on Laakso's new album called "Mother, Am I Good Looking". The album also includes a song called "Dancing Queen". Not sure if it's a cover of the ABBA song but could very well be.

AUSTRALIAN MAGAZINE

There was a 5-page full colour spread in 'The Weekend Australian' Magazine on Saturday. It is about the 30th Anniversary of ABBA's Australian Tour. There are some interesting pictures, interesting (and mostly accurate facts), a quote from ABBAMAIL's Graeme Read and even a picture of ABBAMAILer Ian Cole.

Thanks to ABBAMAILer Michael Cain, we've uploaded scans of the article in our Australian Tour 30th Anniversary section of the website.
